Former child actress Jenny Lewis has almost as many musical alter-egos as Jack White. As well as her solo career, she's played with Postal Service and Rilo Kiley.

Her current project is Jenny and Johnny, with boyfriend and musician Jonathan Rice.

"We're allegedly a couple," jokes Rice, "allegedly".

"Music always comes first," laughs Lewis.

The duo paid a visit to 6 Music on Tuesday (7 December) to play an acoustic session for Andrew Collins.  You can listen to the performance by clicking on this link to the BBC iPlayer.

Among the tracks they played was current single, Big Wave, but Lewis says the track nearly didn't make it onto their album, I'm Having Fun Now.

"I had been working on that song for a couple of years," she reveals. I first put it in the set during some of my solo tours.

"I just couldn't quite finish it. I knew what I wanted to say, but I didn't how to say it. So when we went to Omaha, Nebraska to finish [the album] I just didn't know what to do.

"But Jonathan was very encouraging in saying 'you know what? We have to get this song done.'"

Rice adds: "I think  that's often the case with a lot of artists I know. Sometimes people don't want to put their catchiest songs out there. They get self-concious about that sort of material".
After their live performance, the duo sat down with 6 Music News to discuss how their collaboration came about.
