Major Lazer - the cartoon

Diplo talks about his screen debut, MIA and Thom Yorke

Producer and one half of Major Lazer, Diplo might take his nickname from the dinosaur Diplodocus, but Wes Pentz is best known for unearthing future talent.

He was one of the big forces bringing baile funk out of Brazil and is credited with helping launch MIA.

Last year Diplo teamed up with Switch for the dancehall project Major Lazer, and later this year the pair release a new EP, Lazers Never Die. The record features a remix by Radiohead's Thom Yorke and contributions from MIA and Buraka Som Sistema.

Major Lazer are currently working on their second album. The ML character will even feature in his own cartoon TV series in the US, starting next year.

Rodrigo Davies met Diplo at Red Bull Studios in London where he was making some new tracks - and asked him how he and MIA came to work together.

I wish Radiohead and Nigel all the best with this new release. If it is 80% of what In Rainbows was they've got a winner. I say 80% because I'm incredulous they can match the brilliance of their last, which I still think this the best record of the last decade. Radiohead is in a fortunate position because I know people in their 20's thru 50's that have had the opportunity to hear a band that's been in their prime, then become dedicated fans, and new fans will emerge as they discover a band that has been blessed in so many ways. We in turn, as listeners, benefit.
