Turin Brakes have revealed to 6 Music that their forthcoming album Outbursts might never have happened if it weren't for Take That.
They wrote a track for the man band's latest album The Circus, which went on to earn them enough cash to finance the new record.
"We did write for Take That - because they asked us to," admits Olly Knight. "We were so amazed that they even knew who we were we thought, well we've got to do this because if we don't it's such an opportunity wasted. We also were very aware - and I will admit - that one song on a Take That album could finance an entire Turin Brakes year!"
Without a record label after leaving EMI, the band say they didn't have enough money to write another album.
"We took that money that we made off that song and reinvested it in our studio and this album," revealed Olly. "So technically, you know, without Take That...I don't know if we'd have a Turin Brakes album."
Apparently it's all down to their fan in the band - Howard Donald.
"We took that money and reinvested it in our studio and this album. So technically without Take That, I don't know if we'd have a Turin Brakes album."
Olly Knights
"He likes indie bands and he liked Turin Brakes," said Olly. "He got in touch through a friend who was working for them - she was one of their chefs. She text us saying 'ha ha, would you ever write for Take That?'. And I wrote back and said 'yeah of course!'.
A studio session with Howard and Gary Barlow quickly followed, which resulted in a Turin Breaks penned song for Take That's album.
"It was the final track of the album called Here - which was on The Circus album, which sold I don't know how many millions. A lot of records. And we're very proud to have been a part of it."
The band say it's not selling themselves to the devil - but admit they needed the cash to survive.
"I'm not going to say we made a huge amount but we made enough money to cover a few debts that we'd built up over a couple of years of not being signed. We had to find some money from somewhere. Neither me or Gale have made enough money to sit back and relax by any stretch, so we have to find money. It is about that."
