La Roux have told 6 Music fans should expect a less commercial offering for album number two.
One half of the electro outfit, Elly Jackson, hit the decks for the 6 Mix last night, and also spilt the beans on their upcoming 6 Music Live Combo with Heaven 17.
She told us she and producing partner Ben are really looking forward to the collaboration; “We’re very, very chuffed to be teaming up with Heaven 17. We feel very lucky and when it got mentioned I think Ben nearly wet himself”
Elly said they and Heaven 17 keyboardist Martyn Ware have been fans of each other's music for a while: “He asked to come to one of our very first ever shows. He came and he didn’t get in – the bouncer wouldn’t let him in.
“He was the only person I was bothered about turning up and I thought he didn’t come. He emailed me and said ‘they wouldn’t let me in’ – very annoying.”
Since then, the relationship has developed: “Martyn and Ben have gone out for tea, and talked about music and synthesisers and have had a real geek-off, it’s been quite funny.
She thinks they’ll take a relaxed approach to the Combo: “I think it will be interesting, and I think whatever we do will be fun as well – it won’t be serious.”
La Roux think there’s room to be playful on their next record too, and Elly says it will incorporate a disco sound; “Definitely – really massively. I think it’s probably going to go a lot less mainstream, but it’s a bit of a gamble.
“I’m certainly not going to try and make a mainstream record and I’m not going to try and make a non-mainstream record. We’re going to make the record that me and Ben want to make, but I have a feeling its going to be less mainstream.”
The La Roux and Heaven 17 session will take place at the legendary Maida Vale Studios and will be broadcast on 6 Music at 7.00pm Friday 29 January.
