6 Music is offering listeners a rare chance to witness the coming together of two inspirational acts, celebrating the influence of two of 80s’ leading synth lights on today’s new wave of pop vocalists.

Electronic pioneer Gary Numan is joining forces with the BBC's Sound of 2009 winner Little Boots, while new wavers Heaven 17 and electro-popsters La Roux will unite for two special 6 Music Live Combos.

The unique collaborations will be recorded at the iconic studios of Maida Vale on 7 December and 26 January and broadcast on the station on Friday 11 December and Friday 29 January.

The format sees both artists perform three songs of their own, provide guest vocals on one of each other’s tracks and then do a cover of someone else’s song together.

A Little Numan

Gary Numan defined the synth movement helping to usher in a change in the way music sounded, a revolution that spread to both sides of the Atlantic.

He rose to prominence in the late 1970s with Tubeway Army and their number one hit Are ‘Friends’ Electric? breaking through with the first album under is own name, The Pleasure Principle.

Little Boots in the 6 Music hub

Despite being a consistent hitmaker during the early 80s, the 51 year-old says his forage into Little Boots' world of pop is minimal.

"My pop sensibilities are non-existent," he explained. "I was just really lucky a long, long time ago that I just managed to collide briefly with pop music because my own stuff just isn’t pop music.

"I get Cars was probably the most pop thing I ever did but I think Victoria has a much better sensibility for pop. She’s tuned into it."

25 year-old Victoria Hesketh has had a several hit singles this year, with her album Hands peaking in the top ten of the UK album chart.

As an ex-member of electro-indie band Dead Disco, Hesketh said she is excited about working with one of her influences: "I think it’s just a really interesting thing to be with someone who started all that 30 years ago and for me, who is someone who is so interested in that now.

"I was just such a big fan for such a long time that it’s kind of weird and amazing."

Roux in Heaven

Speaking about the Heaven 17 collaboration, keyboardist Martyn Ware said they jumped at the chance to work with La Roux, who stormed the charts with the hit single In For The Kill and later their number one self-titled debut album.

Heaven 17

"We really like their attitude towards pop writing, and we’re also fans of Elly’s voice - we’re sure that our writing and performance experience combined with La Roux’s youthful energy and talent will create a unique and exciting collaboration," he explained.

For Mercury Prize-nominated pair La Roux, it is a dream come true.

"I know that for Ben particularly this is an opportunity to work with one of his heroes, and that's not something you are often given the chance to do, it's amazing really," admitted vocalist Elly Jackson.

Listen to 6 Music in the week starting Saturday 21 November to find out how you can be in with a chance of being at the Gary Numan and Little Boots session.

They follow in the footsteps of the Paul Weller and Adele, who did the first live combo in December last year (Watch Paul Weller perform with Adele).
