Florence's heavy heart

Singer tells 6 Music she has started penning new material
14 July 2009 - Florence Welch has revealed to 6 Music that she has already started writing new material with her band Florence + The Machine.

Fresh from performing at T In The Park, the kookie singer said she has penned a new track entitled I Was A Heavy Heart To Carry.

She told Steve Lamacq: "It could be good, it could be terrible. I've written a lot of terrible songs. The first line goes: I was a heavy heart to carry/ My feet dragged across the ground."

Florence + The Machine's debut albumLungs  shot in at Number Two in the UK album charts at the weekend just behind Michael Jackson.

The singer said she was overwhelmed by her chart performance.

“I can't believe that it's happened," she enthused.

"We've worked really hard and there are so many people I have to be thankful for. It's amazing, it couldn’t have gone better."
"I felt completely out of my depth on the red carpet."  Florence Welch, Florence + The Machine

Earlier this year, Florence won this year's prestigious Critics' Choice Brit Award. The award honours acts that are tipped to make it big in the next year and picks an artist set to release their debut album in 2009.

Last year's winner Adele went on to sell 1.2 million copies of her debut 19.

Despite the victory, Florence said she was terrified when she first stepped onto the red carpet.

"I felt completely out of my depth," she admitted.

"When you have to do that first red carpet run with all those cameras and stuff I was like, 'How are you supposed to look? How do people in those photos not looked terrified?'"
