Basement Jaxx

Dizzee rave up

Wireless goes bonkers for Basement Jaxx
05 July 2009 - After two sold out nights of Blur at London's Hyde Park, you could be forgiven for thinking nothing could top the revival of Brit-pop magic.

However, as the sun began to set yesterday green lasers fired high into the skies over London, Brixton boys Felix and Simon from Basement Jaxx had different ideas.

Dizzee anthems

The festival gauntlet had already been laid down as Dizzee Rascal whipped crowds into a frenzy, and sent beer flying with his filthy Bonkers baseline.

His number one hit with Armand Van Helden was the conclusion of just under an hours worth of classic Dizzee anthems from debut album Boy In Da Corner.

The set included Fix up Look Sharp, and Dance Wiv Me, which was number one almost exactly a year ago.

That track with Calvin Harris was not the only outing of music from the pair, as new single, Holiday, also landed just in time to provide yet another flip flop fuelled dance off.

However, the old skool seed was planted after the rapper rolled out his version of Dirty Cash.

Basement Jaxx mash up

Next Basement Jaxx stepped up, the sky turned pink and after a stunning day of unexpected sunshine, the crowd were soon on Red Alert.

The pair played a festival pleasing mash up, scarcely referencing their upcoming new album Scars apart from current single Raindrops.

Tunes Jump N Shout, Rendez Vu and Bingo Bang, from the bands first album all got an outing, before they unveiled an acoustic version of Romeo which was led by a sax solo.

An unexpected re-mix of Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon also dropped midway during the 90 minute medley, which also included a cover of White Stripes 7 Nation Army.

Jack Penate crowd surfs

Earlier in the day Jack Penate played a storming show on the main stage, which saw him smash his guitar to pieces after the strap broke announcing:

"Excuse me; it all got a bit too much!"

Track Torn on the Platform followed up the dramatic display, causing a mass sing-along.

This all came shortly before he launched himself into the crowd for a surfing mission which saw him emerge looking like he'd just stepped out of a lion's den.

After discarding his 'favourite' badly shredded jacket, he also appeared confused, as he told the crowd:

"So good to be here Lovebox."

He quickly corrected himself.

As it turned out he'd had a rather late night after playing the itunes festival the night before. He was quickly forgiven as new single, Tonight's Today fired up, before he closed with Be The One.

Ficherspooner entertain

Ficherspooner also made a triumphant return to London after a long break, with their new album Entertainment, doing exactly what it said on the tin.

Flamboyant front-man Casey Spooner pulled off no less than six outfit changes in the 45 minute set, making the only thing missing a catwalk.

Their pop-art inspired show was complete with a full on stage set of mirrored panels, props, and a troupe of dancers. The dancers also kept up with the costume changes, going from silver space suits to ladybird helmets.

But the band played to a half full second stage tent, as the heat meant sweat was dripping off the roof.

Today at Wireless festival sees Kanye West, Q Tip, and Flo Rida take on part two of the bash.
