Hot Chip get mellow

London lads take a more ambient direction
21 April 2009 - Electronic outfit Hot Chip have revealed their next album will be a more 'gentle', ambient offering than anything they have produced yet.

Joe Goddard said he hopes the follow-up to Made In The Dark will consist of "end of the night anthems".

They hope their new material will exist in the same vein as classics like Womac and Womac's song Teardrops and Gypsy Woman by Crystal Waters.

The Londoners revealed their fourth album should be out in early 2010.
"What I'd like to create is an album of end of the night anthems."

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Joe Goddard said:"We're kind of stepping things down a bit because we want to make this next album quite simple, gentle, focussed; just 10 or 11 tracks of really excellent pop songs that hopefully will become timeless classics.

"Hopefully they'll still be tunes that you can play out in a club, but they'll be the end of the night tunes, like Womac and Womac Teardrops, or Gypsy Woman by Crystal Waters."

Even with the album signalling a move away towards a more ambient sound, the vocalist and percussionist said that does not mean they won't mix it up for the live shows.

"They'll be club tunes but not the really banging ones," Goddard continued. "But making songs like that always gives you the scope to do a really banging remix, which we'll probably try and do as well."

Hot chip will be playing very few dates this summer - so they can wrap up the album - but you can catch them at a Crisis charity gig in aid of tackling homelessness.

That one's at a secret location on 5 May.
