MGMT at Glastonbury 2008

The winner is...

Oasis, The Killers, MGMT, Kings Of Leon crowned at NME Awards
25 February 2009 - It was a big night for UK and US giants at this year's NME Awards ceremony, which  took place tonight (Wednesday 25 February) at London’s Brixton Academy.

Oasis, who were nominated in seven categories, walked away with the coveted award for Best British Band.

It’s the fourth time in their career that the Gallagher brothers have won the award, staving off stiff competition from the likes of Radiohead, Bloc Party, Muse and The Last Shadow Puppets.

Las Vegas rockers The Killers were crowned Best International Band, while the much heralded band Muse scooped Best Live Band for the second year running.

It was a hat-trick for Muse as they received Best Album Artwork for their live album HAARP and Matt Bellamy was voted Sexiest Male by music fans.

Following their recent Brit Award success the mighty Kings Of Leon took home Best Album for their highly acclaimed fourth record, Only By The Night.

Psychedelic New York duo MGMT were also big winners, receiving the gongs for Best New Band and Best Track for their Oracular Spectacular hit, Time To Pretend.

Peter Doherty, who is soon to release his first solo effort, received Best Solo Artist.

In other categories, the new US President Barack Obama pipped Noel Gallagher to the post for Hero Of The Year, while former President George Bush was voted Villain Of The Year.

This year’s Godlike Genius award went to The Cure, the legendary English band that formed back in 1976 and created hits such as Friday I’m In Love, The Lovecats and Close To Me.

The NME Big Gig with The Cure, Franz Ferdinand, Crystal Castles and White Lies, takes place at the 02 Arena tomorrow (Thursday 26 February).

For years I have questioned NME's credibility as a serious music publication. The majority these results and to some extent, the catagories themselves, leave a lot to be desired. "Worst dressed", "Best Website" and "Best TV"?

Trish/USA
Bflo got nominated for best AND worst dressed? Strange.
