Linkin Park and Metallica announced for new global touring rock festival
09 February 2009 - It's just been announced that heavy rockers Metallica and Linkin Park will be taking over Knebworth this summer.

They are headlining a new festival called Sonisphere, the first to be touring across Europe.

The event will reach several countries around Europe including Holland, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Finland before coming to the infamous Knebworth on the 1 and 2 August.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says they have a special connection with European festivals: “Europe in the summer, outdoors and Metallica - they just seem to go well together and have for many, many years.

“There is no place that I would rather be than playing outdoors in Europe in the summer, it’s just a vibe.

“What more could you wanna do than sneak off and play rock shows four times a week, so it’s the perfect thing for us.”

Meanwhile, in the UK, 60,000 fans will descend on the Knebworth site for a full, weekend long spell of camping.

Knebworth has played host to a heap of legendary bands including Pink Floyd, Genesis and Queen, who played their last show there, prior to Freddie Mercury’s death on 9 August 1986.
Speaking about why the venue is such a special place, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich explained: “Knebworth is the paramount concert experience because you’ll be part of a list that only features a handful of acts that have played there.

“To be part of Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Oasis, that is obviously an incredible shortlist to be on.”

Sonisphere was masterminded by the creators of Monsters Of Rock and Download festivals.

There will be more line-up additions with the full bill to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Metallica’s sticksman also imparted some advice for all festival goers this summer.

“Bring the right attitude, bring the right openness, be kind to your neighbour, wear your sunscreen,” Ulrich said and joked, “And please, when you pee in that bottle down front, throw it back and to the side, not the band.”
