The Hold Steady

Steady vs Radiohead

"Radiohead have lost the plot" - Tad
17 August 2008 - "Radiohead have lost the plot". Not what were used to hearing about the band - but these are the words of Tad from The Hold Steady.

The guitarist has been exclusively talking to BBC 6 Music about his thoughts on the UK music industry, and in the interview he didn't hold back when it came to the 'Creep' artists.

Muse also came under fire, but he couldn't speak highly enough about Mancunian rockers Oasis.

When asked his thoughts about Radiohead's 'In Rainbows', Tad had this to say:

"I think they've lost the plot. What are they doing? Where are they going? What's happening? I don't get it any more. They lost me. I still appreciate what they're doing, or what they're trying to do. But I think they're trying too hard not to be Radiohead. That seems a little ridiculous to me".

Tad goes on to say:

"I like them as a rock band, all the buttons and sequencing and stuff like that I don't really care for. I'm a fan of rock music and what they're doing now I don't think is very good. When you have that kind of money, you can put on a great performance regardless of what you do. If you can't go out and pick up your instruments and play a good show, that doesn't do it for me. I don't have any interest in that".

Muse

V Festival headliners Muse also came in for a tongue lashing. Tad said of the band:

"There's tons of great musicians out there. There are a lot of people that rely on technology, electronics. I don't want to take anything away from them but it doesn't do it for me".

Oasis

But, Tad admits he does have a soft spot for Oasis.

"I love Oasis. I love them. I think that what they do is earnest. I think it's honest. When they get up and do what they do, it's one take and they get up and they perform. I trust Noel Gallagher to do a good job with the record".

Probably a wise idea to keep onside with the Gallaghers, eh Tad?

Yes, come on Radiohead. Put down those electric guitars and microphones and stop using that infernal technology to live stream a whole show as a thank you to your fans like you did last night. Play some real music like Oasis???

Radiohead have lost the plot. The Bends is still the best album they've ever done. Every album after just goes farther down the pooper.Oasis are what a rock band should be. Go onstage, pick up your instruments and rock. No thing to it just some guys so instruments and some amps. Easy, simple, the way it should be.

god forbid someone has an opinion. you guys are ridiculous. i hope you freak out next time someone disagrees with your favourite color.

Cyrus Barcelona
This moron's "pick up your instruments", pro-physicality anti-artistry argument would be stupid enough, but it approaches new levels of douchebaggery when you consider that "In Rainbows" is the most "organic" record Radiohead have made since "The Bends" and Johnny Greenwould is still obviously a better guitar player than anyone else in modern rock, especially anyone wielding an axe in the Hold Steady. For a band whose appeal stems from the good natured charisma of Craig Finn (who won't even slag off crap bands like My Chemical Romance), this Tad fellow is making them all seam like quite the close-minded rockists.

Saying you don't like electronic elements in rock music is one thing, but saying that having those elements in your music makes you a bad musician is ridiculous! What makes Radiohead Radiohead is that they are constantly reinvention and innovation of their music. Never mind that statement about picking up their instruments- they are one of the greatest live bands around and play the hell out of those instruments! If you 'don't get it' then don't talk about it, fool!

This guy's a moron when he says "If you can't go out and pick up your instruments and play a good show, that doesn't do it for me. I don't have any interest in that." I saw Radiohead last weekend as part of the All Points West festival, and it was only the five band members on stage playing their music, mostly with guitars and keyboards (the same setup that The Hold Steady use to bash out their sub-Springsteen pop). And if this guy thinks Oasis is "honest" (they've ripped off more bands from the '60s than anyone), then I can only think that Tad is living on some other world where "Be Here Now" (Oasis's honest third record) is regarded higher than Radiohead's third record (the mindblowing "OK Computer"). what an idiot.

Hugh from London
This Tad joker is not intelligent enough to realise what he is saying. He is probably too scared that Gallagher will beat him up if he doesn't praise Oasis. Radiohead are exquisite.

Billy, Derby
He's talking nonsense and Oasis are long over the hill.

Alan, Bristol
Seems like a couple of odd comments given that Muse don't rely as heavily on electronics as some bands and are talented musicians, and that Radiohead have been picking up their instruments and going on tour quite successfully this year...

This guy is an ignorant wanna be
