James Murphy

Murphy's new band

LCD man producing new act for his label
20 October 2008 - James Murphy, frontman of LCD Soundsystem, has been recording and playing on an album for a new rock act on his DFA record label, he’s revealed to 6 Music today.

Asked about what it might sound like, Murphy said: “It’s a rock record, a classic rock record.”

Murphy said the new band had been formed by Scott Wells and Paul Sprangers, two former members of Minneapolis band Hockey Night. During the recording, Murphy has been playing some bass and LCD’s Pat Mahoney doing some drumming. He added that some of the members of DFA act Hercules and Love Affair are also contributing.

It's understood the new act won't include either Murphy or Mahoney when playing live gigs, though.

But on the question of the band’s name, he was unsure: “They don’t have a name yet. They have a lot of names that we argue back and forth about. I think they try to come up with the worst names possible just to wind me up.”

Murphy said he’s currently in the process of mixing the new record and expects it to be released in “the first half of next year.”

Hockey Night’s only previous album release was Keep Guessin’ which was on LookOut records in 2005.

Murphy and Mahoney will be playing a DJ set at London’s Matter this Friday in a big lineup that includes a wealth of other DFA acts including Juan MacLean and will have DJ sets from the likes of Morgan Geist and Optimo among many others.
