Oasis – No free music

Noel Gallagher says Oasis won’t follow Radiohead’s lead and give away their album for free.
07 July 2008 - In an exclusive interview with 6 Music, Gallagher explained that he has no plans to follow in Radiohead's footsteps when it comes to their new album Dig Out Your Soul, as he has no intention of making the record free for fans to download.

“I wouldn’t have thought so. That’s not our bag,” He explained. “I didn’t spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America, and the most expensive graphic designer in London to then give it away. F*** that.”

Noel also expressed his opinion on the honesty box policy of Radiohead’s In Rainbows  where fans could pay as little - or as much – as they wanted.

“To be honest, to me it looked like marketing. Y’know? A great way of getting a load of marketing for free really, but good for them. That’s what they do, they’re rebels and outsiders."

Noel also discussed Oasis’ ground breaking new record deal with Sony, which involved a worldwide profit-sharing arrangement for their next three albums and their back catalogue.

“Because we’ve been on our own record label [Big Brother] for eight years, Sony have signed the record label – so they’ve not actually signed the band.” He continued, “So we’re signed to our own record label and they’ve signed that label. And they’ve given us our back catalogue back.

“We’re on our own label in England, but we choose what label we want to be on for the rest of the world, and choosing to license it [the new album] to them. We pay them, rather than them pay us…. I think that’s how it works.

“I’ve been in meetings that were so complicated that I glassed over and just said ‘I’ll sign anywhere, just give it to me.' It was like having a confession beaten out of me.”

Oasis new single The Shock Of The Lightning is out on 29 September and their new album Dig Out Your Soul is released on 6 October.

Its so funny how fickle some fans are. Defintely Maybe is one of the greatest British albums in History, FACT. (Pending Tase) But in 94, you come to my house and tell me you werent into their presence, tunes, eurphoria, and I'll call you a liar to your face! Yes they are past it, but once upon a time, as many bands do for a short period, they ruled the world!! x

If only spending all that expensive money on all those expensive people would equate to a decent song eh, Noel? But those days, like your attitude are regretably resigned to the distant past.

Get into some proper music life is too short - try Kylie, NKOTB, Take That. All better than that indie lad band oasis. truth be told oasis make music for people that don't like music.

Good for you Noel - stick to your guns and refuse to follow Radiohead. Mind you 6 months down the line (or should that be two months) you'll find copies of the next Oasis album going for the price of a pint of mediocre beer in any second hand emporium (record or charity) up and down the land. For example, I was one of the branches of Record Exchange yesterday and I could have picked up any album from the Oasis back catalogue for less than the price of a pint of beer. When it comes to gauging the quality and longevity of music, the bargain bin never lies. So, Noel may want us to pay for the next Oasis album but the truth of the matter is that I would not bother. The economics of the CD bargain bin will dictate that a few months down the line you will probably be able to buy it for next to nothing anyway.
