Oasis – No free music
Noel Gallagher says Oasis won’t follow Radiohead’s lead and give away their album for free.
07 July 2008 - In an exclusive interview with 6 Music, Gallagher explained that he has no plans to follow in Radiohead's footsteps when it comes to their new album Dig Out Your Soul, as he has no intention of making the record free for fans to download.“I wouldn’t have thought so. That’s not our bag,” He explained. “I didn’t spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America, and the most expensive graphic designer in London to then give it away. F*** that.”
Noel also expressed his opinion on the honesty box policy of Radiohead’s In Rainbows where fans could pay as little - or as much – as they wanted.
“To be honest, to me it looked like marketing. Y’know? A great way of getting a load of marketing for free really, but good for them. That’s what they do, they’re rebels and outsiders."
Noel also discussed Oasis’ ground breaking new record deal with Sony, which involved a worldwide profit-sharing arrangement for their next three albums and their back catalogue.
“Because we’ve been on our own record label [Big Brother] for eight years, Sony have signed the record label – so they’ve not actually signed the band.” He continued, “So we’re signed to our own record label and they’ve signed that label. And they’ve given us our back catalogue back.
“We’re on our own label in England, but we choose what label we want to be on for the rest of the world, and choosing to license it [the new album] to them. We pay them, rather than them pay us…. I think that’s how it works.
“I’ve been in meetings that were so complicated that I glassed over and just said ‘I’ll sign anywhere, just give it to me.' It was like having a confession beaten out of me.”
Oasis new single The Shock Of The Lightning is out on 29 September and their new album Dig Out Your Soul is released on 6 October.
