Coldplay - Your Reaction

Tell us your opinion of Violet Hill
29 April 2008 - Violet Hill, Coldplay’s first single from their new album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, was played for the first time on BBC 6 Music at 12.15pm on 29 April.

It will also be simultaneously available to download free exclusively from www.coldplay.com for one week (a full seven days ahead of its general digital release on 6 May).

Will Champion

Drummer Will Champion told the BBC that phase one of this new album cycle has been somewhat nerve-racking.

He said: “All of the work that we’ve been doing for such a long time…..the first bit has started to immerge and its kind of right for picking.

“We know what we think about it but now it’s just about the time when other people are going to start picking it apart and that is quite terrifying.”

Will also told the BBC why they decided to give the track away for free from their website for one week: “We all felt like we wanted to start from zero again and start from a point where we didn’t expect anything of anyone.

“Didn’t have any kind of right for people to buy our music – we just wanted to start again from the very bottom.

“Repay people for the immense amount of support they have shown us over the last 10 years – people that have been there from the early days.

“We feel like it was mostly for those people who have been incredible and put us where we are – it’s for all of you guys!”

What do you think?

And we want to know what you think of the track. Is it as good as their previous singles?

Have the band and Brian Eno developed their sound? Can the new album live up to the success of X & Y

La Vida or Death And All His Friends is released in the UK on 12 June.

Music for people who don't like music.

I've been reading that Chris Martin is worried about not being 'cool' and he seems to be paranoid about a lot of his career. Word to the wise: get over yourself. There are real problems out there. You're creating pop music. Nothing more/nothing less. If you stop so what? If you really want to be cool with the kids give it all away, or better still try to do something reputable with your double first and for christ's sake get real. You have no gravitas in the world? It's easy to find you know. Wake up and stop littering the newspapers with more garbage. How about giving up EMI? Go your own way. Stop speaking -act.

wonderful...what ever they do it winds up being amazing

Sieara/Los Angeles, CA USA
The guitar rifts are kind of cliche, if that makes any sense. The lyrics weren't amazing. The ending was nice. The song is catchy as hell though. I still love them. :)

Maztreeandi, Indonesia
it was kinda weird when i heard it for the first time. it certainly is different from their previous songs. but the more i hear it, the more i like it. and now, i'm completely hooked by it and can't stop listening to it. can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Ant, Birmingham
A new direction and a new sound shades of pink floyd and genesis, I think. Its also similar to the first album in that you might not love it at first but will grow to love it! Brilliant Coldplay are back!

Steve Stevens, Stevenage
How many people who have left positive comments on this board are involved with the bands record company or pr machine? This song is the worst kind of dull, over produced, americanised dross. I agree with the person who said the chorus sounds like the old 'club' advert tune, except that was musically and lyrically more interesting.

Lucas - Brasil
AMAZING! I'm listing this music since yesterday, every time.. the chorus don't get out of my head. the sound is very rich. "If you looooooove me, won't leeeet me know?"

Heather, Vancouver, Canada
Why make a deal about a free download when you can hear it on their myspace page anyway? not impressed. Currently I have trouble listening to Chris sing without giggling because of his duet with Kanye...that made me laugh! I do like coldplay for their shimmering prettiness and Chris Martin's prettyboy voice. Nice candy for the ears, great hooks, beautiful moments, catchy as hell, but their lyrics are not great-the rhyming schemes to obvious if that makes any sense! I can hear Eno in there but it doesn't save the song. the end bit is nice, why not make a song out of that? and I hear the killers in there too!

your house
Can they get any more dull? Dull music for dull people.

Frank - Malaysia
Not Amazing..but powerfull.. sound like a single from U2..or it's just me

Sam - Aberdeen
U2's children are back!(cue a dull album that sells millions of copies)

Brazil
Perfeita!!!

A, Cork
it sounds nice, but as if something is missing. as if it is a truncated part of the entire album. hopefully, it is going to be a beautiful entity, like everything eno has done!

RJ, Cambridge
Its a boring dirge. Even the likes of Eno cannot polish a turd gold.

Glasgow
Amazing - the worlds greatest band are back

Ant, London
Like the song. Can't wait to hear it played live. It's good to have them back

Jon, Leicester
I think CHris has spent to much time with Kanye, really bad!

Davi - Brazil
If depend of Violet Hill, the Coldplay's new album will be amazing e certainly will have a big sucess. Coldplay support me and I really love this. Them song, lyrics, sounds and way are unbelievable. There a strong and magical bass in Violet Hill. The voice of Cris Martin still lovely. Guitar and piano perfect and drum impetuous complete the work of art!We know that word Coldplay doesn't have a really sense . . . but this is changing . . .

DaveG/Bishop's Stortford
Not feeling it, not getting into the vocal or the guitar - pretty disappointing as an opener for the new album after they've had a few years off to think about it.

Handys - Brasil
Wow! Coldplay is Perfect. Love It.Violet Hill are brilliant.

B, Dublin
Everything Eno touches turns to gold... This isn't a brilliant song - a little bit dull actually, but the SOUND is amazing... very dynamic and rich with a very natural ambience. Bodes well for the rest of the album.

Katie, Canterbury, UK
A touch of that old Coldplay-tune united with a fresh hint of new sounds....works for me. Goes into new directions, but not too far from their own sound, which has always been so special and remained untouchable by other bands. I was a bit afraid of what might come with this "we are changing our musical direction" -thing..usually it goes wrong. But if the rest of the material is at the same level, I´m happy. Welcome back, Coldplay.

Maggie in Ontario, Canada
Wow! I have to say that I love X&Y but I think what we're hearing here is a major progression from A Rush of Blood. The hooks in this piece are amazing and, as usual, I can't get it out of my head. I'm going to be in agony waiting for the new album!!!

Jez - Sheffield
AWESOME TUNE - This song sounds soooo good, I just can't wait to hear the whole album, they wanted it to sound different and they have done that brilliantly. 1 question though, is the ablum called "Viva La Vida" or "Death and all his Friends", or "Viva La Vida or Death and all His friends" i know they are separate songs from the record so the latter would be a curious title!! :-s

Philip from Ireland
Wow! This is amazing! I'm so relieved that Coldplay are really going places with this album!

Billy, Derby
coldplay take me away to a special place. Somewhere in my long lost childhood, drinking lukewarm dirty dishwater.

Hernan / London
As Mr Horse from Ren & Stimpy said: uhmmm...No Sir, I don't like it. Well, if I must be more articulate with my thoughts about the song, would say that after a faux entrance with Enoesque atmospherics a la Unforgettable Fire the song goes down hill into the familiar territory of.....Supertramp;then again that is just one view.

Justin - Bountiful, Utah USA
AWESOME!! I think Coldplay has achieved something that few other bands can do: following up a massively successful album with a new direction, without trying TOO hard to be different. Artists sometimes get scared of sounding stale and repetitive, and they over-do change. its definitely different, but at its roots its STILL Coldplay. I've never thought that their first singles are the best songs off the album anyway, so more than anything I think "violet hill" just gives us a taste of this "new direction." VIVA LA VIDA

Graham of brentford
i haven't heard it yet, but imagine it's rubbish.

Muugii, from Mongolia
It's amazing to catch the new, long-waited song, but it sounds like a bit of prev.X&Y's intro track. The more I listen, get more powerful sound! Definetly, would be great hit! I love U Coldplay - TWO THUMBS UP

Daniel/Chicago
Sounds really great.

Stu - Port Glasgow
What's with the weird american accent? Is Chris Martin turning into Bono?

James Bloom, London
Definitely a new sound, and a good one at that. Better than Speed of Sound, which was weak. Number one material? Who knows, Coldplay have been unlucky in that department so far...but Violet Hill signals nothing but good things to come from Viva!

ravi Londaon
Briiliant song and the album will follow through. Im in love with it. Its just amazing

Anna, London
Love it and it's getting better with more listens. Loving the guitars. Good sign of what's to come on the album. Very pleased!

PeaCheS/ France
Violet Hill rocks!!Plus j'écoute, et plus j'accroche à cette chanson entêtante. Comme tous le fans de Coldplay, j'appréhende la sortie de l'album, mais j'ai hâte d'être au 16 juin.:)

Ryan , Glasgow
Sounds like a Chris Martin solo record, not sure if he needs the band anymore. Reminds me of The Charlatans My Beautiful Friend and their comeback single is better than this and thats not saying much...snore zzzz

Chris, Huddersfield
Liking it more and more! On 5 listens now and its growing on me. Cant wait to hear the rest of the album! :)

Dermot Shrops
I'm a massive coldplay fan and I liked it. (Don't love it yet. I think Violet hill will grow. It wasn't instant but there is no doubt in my mind that the more i listen i will love it.

danny/dundee
not the best... but then again who am i to judge!

Helder Porto, Portugal
thats cool! =)

David ...
the end is amaizing ... song is beautifull ... all instruments are important in this song

Dominik, Duesseldorf/Germany
In German you would say, "Der Song geht voll auf die 12"That means sth. like "the songs knocks you out"I think it's brilliant! I love Jonny's guitar.

Jack/Portland OR, USA
Definitely different, definitely makes me curious to hear more. A little too 'country' for me.

Rod/Venezuela
Ok, First off, I'm not a Coldplay hater. I like their stuff (except some really objectively bad songs from X & Y). On my 3rd listen, I find this song, as Coldplay said, "brave". I find it Ok, but nothing beyond that. I was not expecting them to go and be groundbreaking or anything but I don't find the song moving or that exciting. Let's hope the rest of the album is much, much better.

jay nottingham
its a hole lot of OK

girona
i can't download that violet hill, coldplay.com it's just fool!!!!!!!i'll wait...

William, Stathelle, Norway
William from Norway says: I've been looking forward to this in many, many months now, and Coldplays does not disappoint at all. I like the sound a lot, the ending of the song is stunning; now I can't wait for June 12th! You guys are really cool by the way, I gotta listen more to BBC6 these days.. :)

Angelika, Vienna, Austria
Gorgeous song. After years of waiting for new material, I was scared of the new direction they'd choose. But as a Coldplay fan of years and years, I can honestly say this is one of their best songs ever. I'm delighted.

Manolya Enschede/Holland
I love it! its different, but amazing!Great to hear again from them! Especially the ending! Its great!Thnx guys!

simon ebbw vale
its more instant then what they have released in the past.

Nanna E. Kjer, Norway
I loved it. I'm trying to download it right now.

landsman Warsaw, Poland
it was brilliant....

Lee - Newcastle
totally different sound but i liked it :) woo roll on viva la vida"if you love me, wont you let me know!"

Robert Jena/Germany
Nice . . . sound a little bit like back to the roots. Gladly it doesn't sound like the X&Y stuff.

Neb Glasgow
Sounds very Killers!

Melanie in Orlando, FL
Violet Hill - first listen - very different but it rocks

Damian, London
Not having it really. When he sings the 'if...' bit in the chorus, just replace the rest with 'you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our...'.

Barry - Norwich
wow! not what I was expecting at all! loving the fuzzy guitar riff and chris' voice sounds amazing - can't wait for the album!
