Oasis

Oasis top UK Poll

Gallagher brothers get first and second slot
18 Feb 08 - Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe has topped a new Q Magazine and HMV poll of the top 50 Best Ever British Albums.

The British public voted the Gallagher brothers' 1994 debut Definitely Maybe as their number one favourite album of all time and their follow-up, (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, got the number two slot.

Radiohead's Ok Computer, Revolver by The Beatles and The Stone Roses’ debut have made up the rest of the top five.

Q Editor Paul Rees said: "Having voted in their thousands, Britain's music fans have demonstrated a number of things through the results of the poll, not least of which is an abiding passion for great music.

“It's clear that, having polled three times more votes than any other act, Oasis are undoubtedly the nation's most loved band.

Q Editor Paul Rees

As for the strong placing of relatively new artists, Rees added: “The likes of Keane, Arctic Monkeys, Muse and Amy Winehouse have emerged in recent years to be seen as genuinely classic artists in the eyes of the people that matter most - those who buy music.”

Rudy Osorio, HMV Head of Music said: "Most album polls of recent years have tended to see the likes of The Beatles, Radiohead and Stone Roses vie for the top five spots.

“However, as our perspective changes, it looks like many more of us are starting to recognise the iconic appeal of Oasis and the brilliance of Definitely Maybe as an era defining album."

Bill Bragg and KT Tunstall will play a special Best of British show at HMV in London’s Oxford Circus on Monday 18 February to mark Q’s 50 Years of Great British Music month.

Mad Fer It!!

Rolling Stones! 48 and 50!? What!? There are so many bands that dont appear on this list. The Stranglers, Babyshambles, Primal Scream, Ian Brown, The Chemical Brothers, Happy Mondays, New Order (although Joy Division are in there which is a surprise!)What about Bonkers 4? Hixxy and Sharky's best work??!!

Andrew, Manchester
How depressing. And glad to see women well represented, Winehouse and one fifth of Pulp. Says more about Q readers than much else I guess. Yawn.

Bill. Newbury
No Blue Lines and no Screamadellica but two Keane albums??!! Meh!

Mark, Nottingham
It tells you a lot about people who read Q and buy their music at HMV, but not much else.

John, Thorngumbald
Any sampling of the musical taste of 'TGBP' will throw-up (sic) similar results...take any top 50 from any period during the last 50 years and listen to the overall quality of the music contained therein. This poll breaks no moulds, confirming for another year just how pointless such lists are. Mind you on the plus side at least no Genesis albums made the cut...

oasis... you have got to be joking..anything by the beatles only please!!!!!!

keith Millwall
oasis are the best british band by far and deserve 2 be at the top

Sean, Liverpool
The top two albums are ripp offs of albums of. 4,6,12,19,21

El Manzo, Milan
This must be a joke.

Rachel Smith Cardiff
The Editor at Q should be fired for allowing a rediculous list like this to be published. It is representative of only the further demise of Q magazine. Their miniscule amount of credibility is well and truly down the drain. Hilariously unprofessional

50 years of great british music and keane are in the top ten? not a single entry from the jam? no piper at the gates of dawn? an album released 2 months ago at number 40? no hatful of hollow? parachutes not coldplays highest entry? nothing from the kinks? no astral weeks? traffic? caravan? the la's? be here now the 22nd best british album ever?? shame on you the great british public

francis london
this is the most narrow minded 'top 50' list imaginable

Xose, Uviéu (Spain)
Completely disagree, albums like A Night at the Opera, Who's Next, or Sargent Peppers should be upper

Greg, Leicester
Dog Man Star by Suede would get my vote - then again, I haven't heard EVERY British album made!

Seedy, Warrington
I actually voted on Revolver, but me being 26 years old, oasis were my time and have influenced me in so many levels.you can tell the size of the band by even today, how many people have adopted the liam gallagher style - normal people on the streets etc, I don't see many people writing on their hands and wearing miami vice jackets in a chris martin style.brilliant band oasis and actually quite under rated in many respects by lazy journalism and people who dont like people who say what they think like Liam and Noel do.

Mark London
Definately not # 1 or 2. How can most of these albums be compared. The 'British Public' who count on these matters, dont vote in polls.

danno, bridgnorth, shropshire
what tosh!

no-one in particular, nowhere town
Not sure how so many Oasis albums can be in top 50...never found anything special or unique in them

Simon - London
Utter rubbish - hijacked by Oasis and Muse fan websites among others - represents little of the great diversity of British albums.Where is Kate Bush for example?

Paul London South East
What a joke, I don't know what to make of this! were Oasis fans the only people who could be bothered to vote? It might be Oasis fans favourite album but to claim it's Britain's fav from a few thousand people is myopic. Keane? my god Keane over Joy Division or Happy Mondays if were talking genuine era defining music here!

hamworthy/berkhamsted
that list is shockingly bad. a beatles tribute act in top spot and 2 keane and 2 coldplay albums in a best ever list show that it was voted for by cloth-eared dullards.

Darth Kopi, north of Spain
Just as well that U2 are not British. Otherwise, they will go too far.
