Brit Nominations

Pop makes a big noise this year
14 Jan 08 - The emphasis is on pop at this year’s Brit Awards. Take That, Mika and Leona Lewis are all leading the field after the nominations were announced at a special bash in London.

All have four nominations apiece and will go head-to-head in the Best British Album and Best British Single categories.

More success is on the cards for the Arctic Monkeys though who along with Mark Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs and Kate Nash have 3 nominations.  Last year Alex Turner and co won Best British Group and Best Single – this time they will have to pit their wits against comeback merchants Take That who have proven they still have what it takes to come up trumps at the biggest awards bash of the year in the UK. Last year they won Best British Single with Patience and are bidding to do it again with Shine.

X Factor winner Leona will do battle for the Best British Female crown with Kate Nash, KT Tunstall, PJ Harvey and Bat For Lashes who admitted to 6 music that she was overwhelmed:

"I am very proud it seems like there was a lot of ongoing support, I am feeling very overwhelmed, and hopefully it's not going to be too frightening when I write the next album."

Richard Hawley, who missed out on a Mercury Prize in the past to Arctic Monkeys, is now in the running for Best British male, as is Mika, Jamie T, Mark Ronson and Newton Faulkner

Amy Winehouse has one nomination - her cover of the Zutons' Valerie with producer Mark Ronson is in the running for Best British Single.

The nominations were announced by Kelly Osbourne at the Roundhouse in Camden, north London.

I'm rooting for the wonderful Rufus Wainwright to win international male, it's high time he had the recognition he deserves

Amelia - Maldon
mika is w**k. i think arcade fire should win every award their nominated for.

marie in barry island.
there are, what, 20 artists here? for instance, the best international album and artist categories have almost identical artists. This is not a true reflection of today's music, at all. Music in the uk is so varied, the nominations for british group are ridiculous.

guylaine - montreal
congrats mika!!!

Anthony, East Grinstead
What a load of rubbish, although to be honest I don't think it's a great time from british music. The best music seems to be coming out of America and Canada

Garth - Newquay
Mark Ronson - best male solo artist. What's that all about?

Mark, Sutton
Fantastic selection! At least I will not miss anything when I choose life and turn the telly off!
