Ray Davies

Ray Davies Giveaway

His new album is free with the Sunday paper next week
13 Oct 2007 - You'll be able to get Ray Davies' new album, Working Man's Café free with your Sunday paper next weekend.

The former Kink's frontman is giving away his latest release with the Sunday Times on October 21st.

Speaking about the deal he said,

"Personally, it's about reaching as many people as possible. I'm incredibly proud of this LP and am truly excited that 1.5 million copies will be distributed to people who'll hear it organically - the way it was intended. It's an exciting opportunity I couldn't resist."

Ray Davies is the latest artist to distribute his work in this way, following in the footsteps of Prince earlier this summer.

But this time, the record label, V2 have agreed to the deal with the paper.

6 Music spoke to the Sales Marketing Director at the Times Media, Katie Vanick. She told us how it came about,

"Since the Sunday Times Culture section reinvested in its coverage of music, we've been partnering with a number of music labels to promote music and broaden our coverage of culture. V2 used to provide the music for Stereophonics which used to be the soundtrack to our own brand advertising, so we've always had a good releationship with the label. This is an exciting partnership with us, Ray and the record label."

And she say's it's not just about the physical release next weekend,

"We're not just cover mounting ray's new album but we're actually doing one of the first tracks from it available on our website this Sunday. It's all part of helping ray reach a new audience with his album."

Pleasing to hear songwriting as a craft still in existence. I'm very glad I heard this album.

I like the Kinks. I've seen the Kinks live. I wouldn't say I'm a particular fan BUT......this is a good album. At last something that has lyrics worth listening to, tunes that you can hum and production that adds rather than detracts. Great stuff - an experiment that should be repeated by other "oldies" - are you listening Paul McCartney?

Great. Who, under forty, would have registered that Ray Davies (who?)was still alive otherwise? If a few 'fat and fifty' dads leave the disc lying about with their paper this weekend, some of thier idle offspring might pick it up and, lo, a new generation of Kinks fans is found. The riff from 'You really got me' into Top Ten Guitar ever? Discuss.
