George Michael

George spared jail

Banned from driving for two years
08 Jun 07 - George Michael's been sentenced to 100 hours community service and banned from driving for two years at Brent Magistrates court today.

The singer/songwriter was arrested last October on suspicion of being unfit to drive when he was found slumped over the wheel of his car. The court heard that a cocktail of drugs was found in his system. Blood tests found a therapeutic quantity of an anti-depressant in the singer's system as well as club drug GHB and Cannabis.

Speaking on the steps of the court he made the following statement:

"I would simply ask people to understand that the media coverage of this case has been farcical, concentrating almost entirely on the prosecutions' allegations. In reality I've been sentenced today on the basis of unfit driving through tiredness and prescription medicines, which I fully accept responsibility for. I am glad to put this behind me, and now I'm off to do the biggest show of my life."

George Michael will be opening the new Wembely Stadium tomorrow night.
