Online music sales leap

2006 a bumper year
18 Jan 07 - Global online music sales nearly doubled in 2006.

Figures shot up to nearly a billion worldwide, according to a report compliled by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

The rise represents around 10% of all sales, but it hasn't  reached the music companies' 'Holy Grail' of making up for the lack of revenue made in the CD sales market.

The IFPI reckon digitial sales could count for a quarter of all sales worldwide by 2010, but are calling for more action against illegal file sharing.

The IFPI's finding came ahead of Apple, the company that makes the iPod, announcing a record profit of more than one-billion dollars - over half-a-million pounds in just three months.
