Stars tribute to Grant McLennan

Go-Betweens man dies in his sleep
08 May 06 - Edwyn Collins, Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake and Duglas from the BMX Bandits are among the stars who've paid tribute to Go-Betweens' frontman Grant McLennan who died at the weekend.

He passed away in his in his sleep at his home in Brisbane, Australia, on Saturday (6 May)according to the band's official website www.go-betweens.net. He was just 48.

A friend of the star told 6 Music that Grant was the happiest he had been for many years.

He was thrilled with the success of last year's album Oceans Apart, had found a new love in his personal life and had moved into a new house.

The friend continued: "Grant had decided to throw a huge party at his home with caterers and DJs to celebrate how good things were. In the afternoon, he said he would grab a couple of hours sleep because it was going to be a long night."

"In the late afternoon, guests started to arrive and when people started to wonder where Grant was, one of the guests went up to his room and discovered that he had died in his sleep. The lyrics of 'Finding You' seem rather poignant now."

McLennan was a founding member of The Go-Betweens after forming the band with Robert Forster in 1978.

Despite never really achieving commercial success, their credibility was carved from their first album Send Me A Lullaby in 1981 and they became hugely influential on bands such as Belle And Sebastian, Sleater Kinney and Luna.

The band split in 1989 and McLennan went on to release solo albums including Watershed, which got 5 stars in Rolling Stone.

But despite his solo success in 2000, McLennan and Forster got the Go-Betweens back together reformed the band and have continued to record annually.

Their last album Oceans Apart was released to much acclaim last year - and made 'best album' end of year polls in magazines including Mojo and Q.

No cause of death has been announced as yet. McLennan is survived by his mother, sister and girlfriend Emma.

Posting on the Go-Between's message board last night, Norman Blake said: "It's terrible news. I am absolutely shocked. Grant was a wonderful person. Fantastic songwriter. Some of you may know that we were friendly with the Go Betweens, having played a number of shows with them over the years.

"They were fantastic. Great music, lovely people. On the last night of the last tour that we did with them, only last year, Grant prepared us the legendary 'Go-Between' cocktail, basically taking whatever alcohol was near to hand, and mixing it together (that's how it appeared to me anyway). He was a sweetheart, a lovely, lovely guy. Always bright and engaging. Absolutely the life and soul of the party.

I'll be playing his music tonight, and thinking fondly of him and his beautiful smile."

I have been a fan for 20yrs,and hadnt seen news reports,or checked on the net for a week,so i didnt find out until 14/05,my birthday,a day split into total happiness, and total sadness, god bless a truly great man.

I remember nov 5th 1992, the only "Fireboy" gig in the UK, a club somewhere in West Kensington. One of many memories associated with the music of The Go Betweens. Grant and his guitar, truly perfect and will be remembered in timeless songs.

Cattle and Cane, Bye Bye Pride, Unkind and Unwise, In Your Bright Ray - Real unadulterated genius. I first saw them in Edinburgh in 1983 and I last saw them in Toronto 3 or 4 years ago. I find it hard to believe I wont see them again.

Mick, Birmingham
I came across the Go-Betweens in pub in Birmingham when they were touring 'Before Hollywood', I suppose about 1983 and I was hooked. I was lucky enough to catch them when they played Brum for the last time this year. And I do feel lucky that I have had all those years of Grant and Robert's music when the world at large has mostly missed out on it. I can't put into words how much the Go-Betweens have meant to me. Thank you Grant for all the great songs - I know you had plenty more in you, but how can I complain. I will always have your music. My thoughts are with Grant's family and friends who will miss the man - by all accounts, a very likeable man.

A very sad day indeed. Talented song-writers come and go but Grant will always have a place in my personal playlist with his songs such as "Haven't I Been A Fool", "Streets Of Your Town" and "Batchelor Kisses" that evoked summer days even in the height of our miserable British winters..... "...and don't the sun look good today..." Aptly in the UK this afternoon the second line seems all the more poignant.. "...but the rain is on it's way...."

Kev Milburn, south London
Really sad to hear the news. Never had a musical hero pass away before. Saw him a few times and he always seemed such a lovely fella too (remember a particularly great show at the Forum a few years back). As well as his magnificent work with the Go-Betweens I always thought his solo albums were a real treat too. The world has lost one of the truly great lyricists, one who also had a sublime and seemingly effortless knack for penning wonderful and memorable melodies. Favourtite track: the lovely Cattle and Cane, a song about remembrance of beauty now gone.

Tony, Bracknell
Sad day - terrible loss to music. Been listening to the Go-Betweens since "Cattle And Cane" wafted out of the radio all those years ago and I fell in love with their music. Too many great songs to mention - thanks Grant.

Graeme, Glasgow
Was it really 22 years ago that I first saw the Go-Betweens supporting Aztec Camera at the Barrowlands? Who says there's no such thing as love at first sound? Grant was, and will remain, a great talent. Thanks for the memories. Thoughts with your loved ones.

Steve, Manchester
I bought Tallulah almost twenty years ago, and although I didn't appreciate fully straight away, it slowly seeped into my conscience and, along with all the other Go-Betweens albums I bought subsequently, became one of my most treasured records. Very sad to have lost such a great songwriting talent.

Tony, Bracknell
Such sad news. Loved the Go-Betweens from the moment I first heard "Cattle And Cane". Few new albums were more eagerly awaited in my house than new offerings from the Go-Betweens or their two main men. Great, great songwriter - what a waste.

Thom in London
I only discovered The Go-Betweens when I was 18 - second time around. They made some of my favourite ever music. I was so sad to hear about Grant yesterday. 'Right Here' will always make me think of Summer. I played 'Finding You' from the last album and felt lucky I saw them live last year. Thanks Grant.

Paul, Abingdon.
Tragic news and totally unexpected. I've loved the Go Betweens for a good 20 years, and finally got to see Grant McLennan and Robert Forster at the Jazz Cafe back in '99. One of the most perfect gigs I've ever been too. For anyone who's loved the Go Betweens or McLennan's solo work this will come as really sad news. For the uninitiated, get yourself the Go Betweens '16 Lovers Lane' and Grant McLennan's 'In Your Bright Ray'. Enchanting, beautiful records which you'll play time and again.

Jaime
It's devastating news for so many music lovers all around the globe. The Go-Betweens are one of the best bands in history (though never fully recognised) and Grant's sweet poetry will be sadly missed.

liam, prague
saddened by this news. teenage years, music waking you up to the thrill of life. 'liberty belle..'keeps company with the best. listening now, nothing has faded.

Charlie, Bedford, England
Very sad to hear of Grant McLennan's death at such a tragically early age. He will live on through his excellent songs, both with the Go Betweens and solo, and obviously in the memories of his fans, friends and family.
