"It's bonkers" says surprise winner
07 Sep 05 - Antony And The Johnsons are enjoying a huge sales boost after winning this year's prestigious Mercury Prize for their album I Am A Bird Now.Online retailer Amazon has recorded a 900 per cent increase in sales for the album. It shot up from number 50 to number one on the site's Hot 100 chart.
Antony And The Johnsons triumphed at the glitzy ceremony at London's Grovesnor Hotel - they beat favourites Kaiser Chiefs and M.I.A. to scoop the £20,000 cash prize.
Antony Hegarty described the news as "nutty" and "a bit bonkers" as he collected the award from ceremony host Jools Holland in front of a packed industry audience.
He said: "It's just a crazy contest. It's almost like there's a contest between an orange, a spaceship, a potted plant and a spoon. Which one do you like better? It's mad."

The Chicester-born and now New York-based singer/songwriter added: "What's really exciting about tonight is ... it shows the rich diversity of the spectrum of what's going on in music at the moment. It's been so wonderful to be here and meet everyone. I just love so many of the artists that performed tonight."

Judges described Antony as having "a voice to pin you to the wall - and songs that send a shiver down the spin".
I Am A Bird Now was released in March this year and features contributions from artists as diverse as Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, Boy George and Devendra Banhart.
