How to get 5 live

You can catch your favourite 5 live and sports extra programmes in a whole host of ways these days. You'll find us on AM, DAB radio, digital television services, online and on mobile.

DAB radio

You can listen to 5 live and 5 live sports extra on DAB. You don't have to remember frequency numbers and there's no more hiss and crackle!

DAB radios give you a scrolling LiveText service, which gives you info about the programme, news sport and weather feeds and sport scores. Some radios even let you pause and rewind your listening.

Online

The easiest way to listen live online is through the iPlayer. Just click 'Listen live' at the top of this page (uses Flash Player). If you want to listen via Windows Media, Real Player or via your wifi radio then the iPlayer FAQ has all the direct links to launch listening.

You can also listen again to almost all of our programmes for up to 7 days on iPlayer. Sorry, there are a few we can't give you due to rights reasons.

You can get more advice on the iPlayer help pages and also contact the iPlayer team directly.

Mobile devices

Some phones and mobile devices will allow you to listen to us using web streaming. For more information and to find out if your phone supports this feature, visit 5 live's mobile streaming page.

The BBC does not charge you to listen to audio. However, your operator may charge you for the amount of data you use. If you are unsure how much data costs on your tariff, contact your network operator.

We also have a mobile-friendly version of our website where you can access schedules, podcasts, Mark Kermode's latest movie reviews, our Football Player and more. If your handset is WAP-enabled, text RADIO to 81010 and we'll send you this link. Texts cost 12-15p depending on your network and service plan. Or visit www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/5live on your mobile.

Podcasts

You can listen to Radio 5 live and sport extra podcasts wherever you go on your MP3 player. Just download the podcast and then transfer it to your player. You can also listen to the podcast via your computer.

If you're not sure what podcasting is all about then check out some more information before you get started.

Freeview

Freeview is a non-subscription digital television service that just requires a set top box which plugs into your TV set or an integrated digital TV. You can find all national BBC Radio stations plus some local stations too.

Listening on Freeview means you can view LiveText, which is dynamic up-to-date information about the programme you are listening to. In addition, programme, news and event information is available if you press the red button on your remote control.

On Wednesday 30 September 2009 improvements were made to the Freeview service to pave the way for the digital TV switchover. You will need to re-tune your Freeview TV or box (including BT Vision and Top Up TV) to ensure you continue to receive all the available channels. The re-tune will also help to make Five as widely available as the other terrestrial channels at digital switchover.

Cable TV

Digital cable (Virgin Media) is available on subscription and requires specialist installation of a cable connection point and set top box. BBC radio channels are available free on all subscription packages.

Like Freeview, you can see LiveText, the dynamic text about the programme currently on air and programme, news and event information. Tune in and press the red button.

Satellite TV

There are two satellite television services: FreeSat and Sky. All BBC national and regional radio stations are free on Digital satellite television; there is no need for a subscription. However, you'll still require a dish and set top box.

On Freesat, you can see on screen dynamic text about the programme and programme listings are available from your remote control. On Sky there is currently no way of accessing dynamic text or a radio programme guide.

You can also access 5 live on AM. Sports extra is not available on AM; it only broadcasts on the digital platforms outlined above. However, Test Match Special is usually available on Radio 4 LW.
