In general, the way you dress defines you, so people always have some level of judgement by the way you dress. Its just a natural Human response.
Why do business men dress in suits? Is it because they want to show people how casual they are? No. Its to show they're smart, clever, important, busy and organised, and thats the impression you get of them.
You dress how you want, dont think what others think of your clothing, be strong and do what you have to do in life.

JP, what language are you speakin mate?
public perceptions are swayed by appearence but as Emma said above attitude and character is ultimately the determinent of what people think of you.
If you 'buss blazers and converse and dem kinda garms' but your a rowdy cretin who bowls around ( and cant write properly) people's will drop their preconceptions of 'a person in a blazer' and label you a threat

Yes this is true and continues into adulthood, I'm nearly 21 but still i get followed around shops when im dressed in a tracksuit or parker jacket, it drives me nuts because security guards and shop assitants arent so quick to follow me round when im on my lunch break from work and wearing smart clothes. Its almost as if they think people dressed smartly dont teef things !!!
Also i notice in general people look down on me when im in a hoodie and crepes with my hair back in a ponytail. Its about time people realise , you cant judge a book by its cover.

I think young people who are irritated by these comments are fooling themselves when they say that they can't see why people feel intimidated by them wearing these clothes. When you see young guys wearing their trousers round their ankles and hoods up over their caps etc, you only have to look at the way they carry themselves when they wear this kind of look - they take on this stupid walk and behave in an intimidating manner. The hoods up etc gives them notoriety - but they should be more open minded about the effect this has on older people who can't see their faces and worry about large groups of kids on the street.
Young people know full well the kind of image they're portraying when they wear all this stuff, and frankly they revel in it. The reality is that many many young people behave in an intimidating manner when they have their hoods up cos most of the time they are chickens and don't want thier faces to be seen when they are happy slapping and the rest of it! I may be an old fart but I am realistic and the behaviour of young people on the street these days for the most part leaves a lot to be desired - lets stop mollycoddling them and face reality!

Why walk around with your hood up? Are you trying to hide you face, you're not a Jedi Knight and never will be! Show some manners when indoors and take your hood down.

it does bother me when people stereotype me cause of the threads i rock, thinking im a gang banger or what not...but end of the day it shows how ignorant they really are so keepin my focus on this aspect of it makes me smile a bit on a shady topic full stop...amani (peace) -oNe-

people nowadays always judge you by what you're wearing. i buss out differently and i always get different reactions.the media make so hard for the youth to be themselves.

People definitely judge u on what u wear. I wear alot of different styles and at work for a few years had to wear suits. If you go out in a tracksuit though people treat you like u r sub standard or somethin. I agree wiv JP tho, sometimes when u go out u get looks but i like doin it anyway cos its funny to see people lookin. thats how it should be, we should wear wat we like these clothes aint killin anyone! unlike the papers think, a hoody cant hurt someone, its the person wearin it.

Throughout history youth culture has rebelled against their parents. Only now we have governmental strategies placed against us to ‘quieten the kids’ down and to keep us out the way.
We should be playing these media fools at their own game. Proving that what we wear DOES NOT signify any animosity, or threatening intent towards anyone. It’s the fashion some people like. The real problems society need to tackle range much wider than costume- it’s about the lack of good education, segregation of communities and youths from society, CCTV, improper policing and a tabloid media dictatorship that blinds us.
Basically now it’s hood up = potential thief/criminal. Wise up and stop buying into it!
