1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Could you be racist?
Are you racist?
Can a website judge if you're prejudiced? Two million Americans have taken an online test devised by academics and now it's arrived in the UK.
The Implicit Association test works on your instant reactions to good and bad words and images of black and white faces.

By going fast, your unconscious prejudices are supposed to come out. But critics say it depends on your hand-eye co-ordination. See weblinks on the right to do the test.

One 23-year-old Londoner who came out with a preference for white Britons says "It could be telling me something about myself I don't want to admit to. It's quite depressing."
Thankyou for your comments. This debate is now closed. Read on for a selection of your emails.

i think the test could be inaccurate because it told me i prefer white people rather than colured people but ive never thought of myself as a racist and never will. however living in a small village in somerset maybe its hard not to have a subconscious preference towards white people.

Hi, Jus took the test and it says i have a moderate preference towards whites, how on earth can it tell that from clicking i and e quickly? I have several black and white friends, my best mate growing up was black..... I mean pretty offended by the result, Total Rubbish

Neesie
I did the test and it says I have a moderate automatic preference for black people. I am white and as far as I'm concerned am totally neutral and unbias. Still the test was interesting if not accurate.

Well, i think all of the tests on the site are fun, but i can't tell if they're reliable or not. It said that i don't prefer one race to the other, which i am very sure is true. The one fault I find with this is that it does rely more on experiences to feelings, and I haven't had hardly any interaction with black people in my life, and I am white. I think the creators should focus more on the feelings of the person doing the quiz to give more accuracy.

I'm a white gay (and now rather smug) Londoner - the tests found I had no prejudice against blacks, Asians, old people or the overweight. But it did say I preferred gay to straight. Yeah, well I could have told them that when I was eight!!

Gyall
Did the black and white one and i have equal preference for both skin colours.. mind you i had the same result when i did the white-british compared to asian-british.. but to be honest i think that there is an order effect going on, and because you get used to the task with the words in a specific place, that when they change them round it throws you completely.. so i do agree with the hand eye co-ordination thing..

Kirsty
I dont have a prefernce either, I didnt think I would considering I'm mixed race and was brought up in a mixed environment, including asian cultures!!

Dennis O'Brien
Did the test and I have a bias toward my own skin colour which is black, as this test seems to depend on speed as well as association of good & bad words. I imagine as I'm used to my people I can see who they are straight away; strange as I know that most white people I have come in to contact with have no idea od facial expression of black faces. I have suffered the "why are you so angry" even when I have not said or done anything to give that impression? In all a fun test and anything that provokes debate has got to be good. I hope my White girl friend agrees to do it as well?

RJ
Hmmm, I'm not convinced about this test at all! It says I have a moderate automatic preference for white people (I thought at the very least I would be perfectly neutral), & just to further test validity I did the weight preference test - now between friends I confess to having an absolute in built gut reaction that means I don't like to look at obese people, especially on TV, at dinner time - & all it says is I have a slight preference for thin people?!? I think at best it's an exercise in independent hand eye co-ordination…

Rubbish. Total rubbish. I don't think it gives a realistic result as it said i prefer black relative to whites. It just confuses people.

I just took the test and it stated that I have a strong preference to White people over Black people. I found this result very surprising as I am Black British. I'm from London, so throughout my younger years all my close friends were from ethnic minorities; not only Black but Asian and Chinese.

However, I am now currently studying at Uni in York, and there isn't a diverse population here. I would say living up North has introduced me to more white people and most of my mates up here are white. I wouldn't say that this has made me more preferable to white people; I'm definitely not aware of having this preference. My last couple of relationships have been with White guys, but I’d put this down to the lack of Black men up here.

My best mate up here is Chinese, and the test told her that she has a strong preference to Black people. This is really strange as she only knows a couple of Black people up here (including me), and even though she lives in SE London like me, she hasn't got any Black (African/Caribbean or Asian) mates down South. Maybe this proves that the test isn’t 100% accurate; I think it's a load of rubbish.

I just took the test, I'm white myself, and it revelaed i have little or no preference towards white or black. I'm a little surprised cos I'm an avid listener of 1xtra and 'black music' so i would have expected maybe a preference toward black people subconsciously. However, the test is about association of good or bad with black and white, so really I think it's all about understanding of both different cultures and different experiences with both.

I'm originally from london where there is a very multi-cultured society and i have been surrounded by black other races through growing up, and i've experienced good and bad things from black people. I now live in middlesbrough and have lived in the north east for the last 5 years, where it's a rare sight to see black people (this is changing), and to be honest i prefer a much multi-cultured society.

I've experienced a lot of bad stuff from white people up here, muggings, thefts etc... i think it's these expereinces i've had of both good and bad from both races that make me feel equal towards both. it goes to show that it doesnt matter what colour you are every human being is capable of positive and negative things.

What is interesting is that my gf took the test who is from sunderland, and has generally not had much interaction with black people, her result showed a moderate preference to whites, but I don't think this makes her racist, i think it goes back to the experience shes had with black people. Its the associations your brain makes with certain things isnt it, and its a fact that most people remember bad things quicker than good things. Anyway i cud go on n on with this but i think i'll stop here. It's a useful test but i think it relies too much on your experiences and not your feelings.
