1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Old or new hip hop?
Ice-T
A war of words has broken out between Ice-T and Soulja Boy over old and new hip hop. Who are you backing?
In one corner of the internet is Ice-T who claims Soulja Boy "Single handedly killed hip hop" with his song Crank That. The 50 year old rapper called the track garbage. And tells the 17 year old to get his rap game on.

In the other corner with a video reply is Soulja Boy who's told Ice "the reality of it is, the game has changed" and "if that's really how you feel then do something about it. If you really think its dead, revive it".

Now Kanye's waded in the row, backing Soulja Boy. On his blog he says there are no rules and that's what real hip hop is to him.
Do you agree with Ice-T, has Soulja Boy "Single handedly killed hip hop"? Or is Soulja Boy right, has the game moved on? Who do you prefer?

Hiphop died in 1996 with bad boy records biggie and his nonsense. It hasn't recovered since.

I agree with Ice-T. I understand that not all people are into old skool hip hop, but all soulja boy did was to make a song as quickly as he could and he has little passion. soulja boy failed to turn up to 2 club nights in london which shows he dosent have much of a passion for music.

Yeah im with most you guys on this.. it should have its own catogory or something with lil John and all the other clown so called rappers, if your wanting the HIP HOP to come back.. it is its here in the UK check out some good sounds from Skinnyman, Skrein, Roots Manuva, Jehst its all real good Hip hop, 4get Solja Boy listen to real music.

smoke
i agree with a few of ya... its been dead for a good while now. look back at people like Big L, Nas, Mobb Deep, then compare them to Souljia Boy and G-G-G-G-U Not...its an embarresment to the legacy of the greats

Dom
It's obvious that Soulja Boy isn't a great rapper - but Ice T has been made to look a complete .... here by, er, Boy.Basically, hip-hop moves in cycles, and maybe we'll eventually get another Golden Age eventually. Until then, er...Soulja Boy, Jibbs, MIMS...there ya go!

Zack
i totally agree wit ice -t i mean we come from masterpeices such as Eric B And Rakims "Paid In Full" and Gangstarr and A Tribe Called Quest who were saying something about the world that matters not just makng songs so that there are new ringtones. Soulja Boy is just a long line of poppy rappers making hits for the masses not caring about the real people on the streets. hip hop was born in the streets of new york because of mass racist agression and if we are not careful hip hop could die in the arms of a record executive with a synthesiser

Soulja hasnt killed it, it was dead long ago, soulja is just kickin it while its down tryin to totaly kill it off. No one is doin it like they used to, it used to be about tellin it how it is, and keepin it real, now its all just comercial.Unfortunatly most the people listening are to young to remember the old skool. I say bring it back, Ice-T show them how it sholud be done release a new album, where is Dre at, where is the chronic 2008!!?? We need a revival of GOOD OLD SKOOL HIP HOP!!

Soulja Boi did what he did and got paid. However, he sold out. The outcome of this argument will depend on your view of whether you think making pop tunes for money is good or bad. Fair enough he got a bit of money from it (if people are stoopid enough to buy it...) but you can't really call it hip-hop. Soulja Boi makes pop music. Hip-hop for me has an essence, whether it be positive, conscious, gangsta, intelligent or whatever. They all share a core which is that of pushing a boundary in some way or another. Ice-T's era moved towards gangsta rap cos it was a reflection of that era. People like KRS-1 spoke about the same thing but in a different way - both pushed boundaries. Now you got 50cent (who is i suppose gangsta) is quite clever with rhymes and when he started out he had something to say and wasnt afraid to say it - pushed the boundary. You've also got Kanye, Common, Mos Def...intelligent artists who can have fun on a record but do it with credibility due to the intelligent and innovative rhymes and flows. Pushing boundaries.Soulja Boi hasn't pushed a boundary. He has made a catchy tune, not much to say but the masses will lap it up. Pop artist.

It's all about old skool hip-hop for me. Nowadays, it's all too commercial, most beats are sounding the same and what they talk about is predominantly the same thing too- money, women, drugs.Old skool was hip-hop was fresh, rappers had something to say. Artists had more passion in what they were doing. Nowadays, i think artists are in it for the money and fame. British talent is on the rise but alot of them dont get marketed well or receive the credit they should (i.e - Klashenkoff)All props given to artists for using their ingenuity . Hip-hop is constantly evolving, so.. let the game continue....

Different Music appeals to different Generations, soulja boy is catering for his Generation, but hey i'm 37 and when i'm out and i hear soulja boys's tune it just makes me hype..................... Its a club banger......... And Ice T's son is proably jealous he's not making hits....... Everyone is entitled to Dream and Acheive so good luck to all that try...........

skins
i think soulja boy just taped into a gap in the market,by makeing catchy song's,i think it say's more about the fan's,he just giveing them what they want.sounds like a bit of a husle.....=)

niko
they both right. Ice T been out of date. Last time Ice T was current was Cop Killa. That said Crank That is just a nice beat and a couple catchy lines. Souljah Boy's voice sounds cool but there is nothing to the song. In terms of music its garbage beyond just bein catchy for the kids.

jiggy
i think that this argument is ridiculas you cannot compare these two artist ice-t does classic old skool hiphop soulja boy does new skool hypa hiphop i think in this day and age there are different types of hiphop (which is a good thing) you still have some artist that like to keep it ol skool with the lyrics that send a message. and you got artist that like to make people have fun with dancin etc...i dont see what the big issue is if music is progressin this much why cant we all just recognise and enjoy it.

Smiler
I have all of Ice T's albums (from Rhyme Pays all the way through to Gangster Rap) and have been a long time fan since I first heard dude's 6 N' The Mornin'. One of the greatest of all time. Along with a couple of other old skool dudes, he started Gangster Rap. What has Soulja done?Lyrics is what rap is all about and Soulja Boi has none! Okay, so the beats he uses may be novelty but I guarantee that people won't remember him in 20 years and he definitely won't still be performing. Now, look at T. Geezer still putting out tunes and a quality actor at that. Longetivity man, that's what it's all about....

kamesha
well i personaly think that old skool and new skool hiphop is good. i think it all depends on the meaning of the song, lyrical content and what message it gives. hiphop is a way of expressing your feelings, where as soulja boy doesn't chat sence and he gives a negative message. i think new skool hiphop has more catchy beats but no meaning or flow. old skool hiphop people maybe be able to relate or understand what a person feels. i think both old and new skool hiphop is good it just depends on the artist and the content. but i don't like soulja boy, i can't stand him!

Fluid
I'm with Ice-T all the way! However, I wouldn't say that Soulja Boy has 'killed' Hip-Hop. What I would say is that he is part of the evolution that is turning what Hip-Hop was, into a mono-syllabic monster! Youuuuuuu!

Shan
Ice-T is right on one point soulja boy is rubbish, matter of fact most of what has come out of the south side is rubbish. Hip hop nowadays is more about the beats then the lyrics. This is why you see rappers like souljah boy, lil wayne, 50 cent and even kanye west sellin' cos lyrically they are all weak. No-one listens for the lyrics just the beats. The only rapper who has kept hip hop goin is Nas and when he retires hip hop will be completely dead.

Matty
Hip Hop is constantly changing and to the purer fan is not as good now as it was however there is still a distinct difference between good and bad hip hop. Good = Jigga, Kanye, NAS, Talib, Mos Def! Bad = Soulja boy, Jeezy, Flo Rida, Tony Yayo etc. Most rappers breaking now only have slick production (Flo Rida gr8 example!) and the lyrics are so bad an 8 yr old could write them. But every now and then you will get a true talent like Kanye who has an education of hip hop how it should be and can write, produce and rap a number of styles and rap about relevant things other than money and ho's.The talent is still there and hip hop is still the best. As with anything where there is a good version there is always a bad version!!Still no replacing 2pac tho!

Hip Hop died long before soulja Boy popped up on the scene. US Hip Hop is a prime example of how mass producing the same types of songs over and over again can kill a genre's individuality. All the songs sound the same these days.

When I first saw the soulja boy tune, I thought it was a joke. Surely no-one with a mental age over 12 years appreciates this rubbish ! It's embarrassing.

I have seen Hip Hop / Rap grow and evolve since the 80's. For me it hit it's creative / intellectual peak in the early to mid nineties. Then it became far too commercial. With the exception of a handful of players, everyone wanted to jump into it for the cash.

There have been far too many artists going platinum on their reputation alone, even though their albums have been complete rubbish. I would bet that most of the people commenting on here saying that Ice T should keep his mouth shut, are probably too young to even remember 1 song he did and would obviously not know how it felt to hear those songs at that particular time.

The only creative form of Hip Hop / Rap these days is from the UK. The sound is fresh but needs to be marketed correctly. US rap is well on the way to becoming redundant in this country, so promoters need to keep their eyes open for the right moment.

frencho
Hip hop needs other branches or platform as to categorize new genres that promotes versatility in this movement...We do owe a lot to the old skool for establishing gansta gun tooting rap, conscious lyrical rap, politically engaged rap, breakdance music, turntablism and mad mixing, yeah and we progressed since to pionneers in orchestral type of shows a la Kanyeasy or Jay-z Fade to black concerts or other MTV unplugged, ...Now souldja boy deserves the title of king of the younger dancefloor crazy scene...!!! Quote me! hip hop is the universe...Ice T don't "playa hate"! and loosen up unless you wanna confuse your own...

charlotte
soulja boy has kicked ice-T behind all over the hip hop world. soulja boy is a lot betta !!! Ice-T go cry yourself to sleep!!!

JJ

Soulijah bwoy is an idiot unfortunately talking about superman dat hoe and throw sum d's on it. I mean come on I dont want my younger family listening to this as its negative. On the flipside its good to see a young black boy trying to make it in the game.

I have been a long time admirer of Ice T., and i have only started to familiarise myself with Soulja Boy and his music listening to 1xtra....Me being a music producer, I know music changes with the times no matter what style it is .For insatnce, you would'nt have heard certain tracks a decade ago what you are hearing now, it just changes...sign of the times.I must confess i'm not a big fan of Soulja Boy and i must also say his music does annoy me, but i hold high admiration for him and what he has achieved ....He has worked hard with a dedication that is lacked by so many.....I take my hat off to him.So, for Ice T to express such comments, regardless whether he or others think its true it should not have been said ......Hip Hop is forever changing...its another era ....to me its all good.respect Steve Augustine aka Kd Sounds

I never ever liked that soulja Boy tune and his lyricals r the worst. When i first heard that tune i never wanted to hear it again and i always mute when it comes on, its pure cheesy wanabe hip hop finkin he all that when he a nobody, sick of that boy.

Amxx
I'm A Big Fan Of Old Skool Hip Hop, Thats where it all began which is why i can see Ice Ts point because if you compare the likes of soulja boy to nwa, eric b and rakim, krs1 (list is endless), theres no comparison, but then again hip hop has changed dramtically its nowhere near being as raw as it was, more hip pop than hip hop.

Veestar
Im wiv Ice-T on this, dat SouljaBWOY needs to find a lyric! Yeh da music's live but da lyrical content is straight rubbish Although i would'nt go as far as sayin da yout has single handedly killed hip hop dats a bit much but he sure as hell aint helpin it & dats real!!

derek
Coming from someone who's moved genres and now is an actor, I don't think he's in a position to comment on what is happening in the genre these days. Hip-hop used to be party music way back before the moniker of hip-hop, when it was called disco-rap. Soulja boy may be pretty poor lyrically, but he represents a part of hip-hop which has become forgotten in the last 15 years of Gangsta Rap orientated sales. One could argue that Ice T and his ilk killed the party vibe of hip-hop by rapping about violence. More to the point this is likely to be some form of promotion for Ice T now that he's out of the limelight.

lee
i think its good soulja boy is bringing new to hip hop and i think ice-t is wrong hes a young hip hop artist that should be allowed to show his tallent

timraw
I prefer soulja boy every other word isnt the N word hes more professional Ice T is just swear after swear and no beat. Soulja boy shoudlnt be gettin full of himself though because he is nothing new either.

soulja boys still better maybe not on his new song as much but he shows more creativity ICE T needs to grow up and stop bullying kids he wasnt so great when he started
