1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Are we beauty mad?
Eye Jewellery
Eye jewellery: available in Holland
Are we beauty obsessives? Say goodbye to body piercing and tattoos, the new way of enhancing beauty is getting eye jewellery.
It involves inserting a glittering, platinum half-moon or heart on the front of the eyeball.

Its Dutch pioneers say the technique is harmless and has no side effects but UK eye specialists reckon it could cause scarring and bleeding.

So far seven people have had it done, at a cost of £300. But is it worth it?
Would get your eyes jewelled up? Is eye jewellery going too far? Are we beauty mad? Can you put a price on beauty? What is your idea of beauty?

kelsey
how much is that in american dollars?!

Hanna**
I think it would be so annoying, it would be like having a fly in your eye all day. It would be alright for discos and clubbing but apart from that it's a waste of money and like tooth jewellery it will go out of fashion really quickly.

Kat
Well, okay, it looks nice 4 a party. But what about when you're at sum glamorous event or working as a businesswoman? Or when you're 60 years old... brrrrrrrrr...

Shell, sian n kelly
It looks stupid and for the money it costs it looks really cheap.

jo willis
i think ts cool

Gillpill
yeah it will make ur eyes shiny and it will be nice

Jes
I think it's kinda mingin, and where's the proof that it doesn't have any side effects? It's people's choice, but I think they should get the facts, or consider how many shoes you can buy with £300!

lhk
i cant belive sum people fink dis is sexy it just looks ming and all my frinds fink so as well. most of da boys i now fink its a turn off.

sarah!!!!!
MINGIN - u will either not b able to see it or it will b really obvious i and look like u have a fly in ur eye YUK we already have contact lenses there fine betta than havin a sequin in ya eye

alice(w)
it just shows how insecure the ppl of today are, they feel they have to out-do everyone else. its vile, but if someone wants to do it, then fine. we shouldnt judge.

Stephen
I say it sounds like a lot of fun. We own our own bodies and can do what we want with them. Where can I get it done?

Rachel
I think it is minging!!!!!!!! I suppose it would be alright for clubs and discos. anyway it's probably just a craze and will dissappear soon!!!!

Emma
i think it looks good but the thought of it in ur eye it makes me cringe coz my eye is the sentive part of my body so i wouldnt get it done.

Sam
I'm not worried, it will just be a fad. Anyone remember tooth jewellery?

Leanne
id get it done looks hectic

moonbaby
come on get real! isn't it irritating enough getting something in ur eye like dust or an eyelash, having an eye jewel would be like that 24/7!! how irritating! and to pay for it as well u've gotta be stupid!

Ruth
its really cool! its soooo different and thats what ppl like! i wud love to hav it done (if i had that money to spare) its good to be diferent and it DOES look nice!

Jemma x
For that much money it looks naff- it's not like its really visible- you'd have to be really close to see it. Can it actually come back out again? What happens if it goes out of fashion, or you don' like it?

Jem
why dont these 'pioneers' spend time researching cures for illnesses rather than inventing pointless pieces of jewellery that could cause even more harm?

Sarah
It's just bizare, who in their right mind would do that? It's just goin 2 far.

lou
It does look alright. But for the cost, and possible damage to your eye. Anybody who has it done is obviously a complete fashion victim.

bekki
I think that it looks really stupid. It's just another way for someone to make a ridiculous amount of money.

Bluebabe
It looks totally digusting. Having something glued to ur eye, gross! The price is way over the top.

Vicci
It should be banned! Buy contact lenses that have patterns made inside it. Really it will save you loads and it lasts longer!

Sophie
I Think it looks nice, for a party or special occasion, not permanentley though. Who would pay £300 for a tny little jewel though?!

Jas
It's pathetic, it looks really nasty. If these people think it's a way of getting noticed then they're stupid, u should be happy with the way u r and not have 2 pay £300 4 some nasty thing in your eye.

suzy
Who the hell is stupid enough to do that? It's expensive! Just imagine if it came loose or went in your eye! Ouch! Wouldn't it be uncomfortable when u sleep? Beauty should be shown naturally, trust me it's more impressive and respected.

Jemma
I think its stupid! Why pay that amount of money and risk your eye sight when you won't see it that much anyway?

summer
how can people do that to their eye they should have more respect for their bodies. Has no-one thought of wot will happen to your eyes in the long-term or what happens if it falls out or cuts the inside of your eye when you are sleeping?

jade
I think that it looks quite striking and would be nice for a party just for one night, but i would definitely not have it inserted into my eye permanantly that is going a too bit far!

amanda2
I hate the idea. Some people are born without sight and then other people are willing to risk theirs for a little piece of jewellery that probably won't even get noticed. I also think people should be happy with who they are and what they look like naturally.

GymBunnie
it's ludicrous!

Emma
Eww! I think it looks awful! Just the thought of it turns my stomach!

Rowena
I think its minging! Its horrible. I can understand putting coloured contacts in but THAT is horrible!

Tammy
What is the point? I think people who do this must be so insecure as to think a piece of platinum embedded in their eye makes them look better. Talk about get a life!

Megan, Gloucestershire
£300 for something that could seriously harm your eyesight!!! Some people just take beauty too seriously and later in life they get nowhere.

jaz
i think it looks good but no way i would have it done.

Morgan
I think that is going wayyyy to far! I think it lookz stupid and I'm a model and I'd never wear them.

Anne
I think this is a really silly idea. Beauty is so overrated, we are what we are and that's that. Also, is there much point if there's the slightest chance of it ruining your sight? I just don't see the point.

Jasmine
I am sorry but that is just stupid. Wouldn't it bug you when you would blink?

bethan
i think this is crazy!!!!! the fact that someone has taken the time to invent something like this and then for people to actually want it done is beyond me! the amount that it cost aswell is also crazy! £300 for a little gem in your eye is (again!!) crazy!

jessi
god it's stupid! sure it might make you look good for a while, if anyone notices! but you don't want to risk your sight. piercings and tattoo's can be removed and healed but you can't reverse blindness!!! just dont do it!!!!

Sian
I think it's totally disgusting! Tooth jewellery was one thing but this is taking it slightly too far! Our generation becomes more vain as the days go by.

lauren
What is the point of these, it probably won't be noticed and it looks too odd and it just isn't natural to put things other than contacts on your eyeball!

Phillipa
This looks disgusting and is the jewellery worth risking your sight for? You will only regret it after.

Laura
Beauty is on the inside and if someone has to spend that much to get noticed, they are shallow.

Lalia
I think people need to stop bashing it. If people want to spend the money and more than likely pain to get what will make them happy that's their perogative. I think it's cool I wouldn't do it but it's different.

Tasha
It looks 'ok'. It's bad enough spending £300 on a clothes let alone an eye jewel. If it was £2.50 say, i might buy one, but that is way over priced!

Alicia
Fair enough it's about getting noticed for being different but would you not look stupid in a few years time when this craze is forgotten and every one is walking around with good eyesight and you can't see where you're going?

Chris Davies
This is just stupid. To risk your eyesight just for eye jewellery is mad. Most people won't even notice. I think some shallow people rate beauty too highly, looking good is one thing but this is too far. My idea of beauty is more natural rather than shallow and cosmetic.

sam, bristol
It's pretty stupid.

Vikki
I think it looks minging! Anyway who in their right mind would pay to have that in their eye? Some people have more money than sense!

Mc Vee in Russia
Expression comes in many different forms... tattoos & piercings are personal, so if one person likes doing that sort of thing, then what's wrong with it. Just don't moan when you're 70 years old and look like fool!

Graeme
It just amazes me that any one could be so vain or stupid as to risk their eyes. If a tattoo or piercing goes wrong you may have some discomfort of a scar, if this goes wrong you could be blind -there's no comparison!

Chris
....and this is clever because?

Amanda
Ideas of beauty are always changing and mutating. Look at any culture and see what is considered beautiful, implanted breasts, very white teeth, stretched necks, elongated heads, pointy teeth, tribal scars, tattoed chins etc etc. Really it is about identification, getting noticed for being different or following fashions.

Jason
Why not make a contact lens with the shiny thing laminated into it? I bet it wouldn't cost that much.
