1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Young Married and Divorced
Newly married couple
In the UK the average age for a first time bride is 32 and 30 if you're a groom but not everyone wants to wait that long. What's the right age to tie the knot?
With the overall divorce rate lower than it’s been for years young couples are the most likely to split up.

1Xtra meets young couples who are getting ready for their big day and the husband and wife who are beating the odds and making their relationship work.

We also find out what can go wrong when you head down the aisle before you’re ready.
How do you know when it's the right time to get hitched? Do you think young marriages can go the distance? What's the secret to making relationships work?

Why should they wait? If they are absolutely certain that they want to spend the rest of their lives with their partner then why not? Age has nothing to do with love, but people whatever their age must not make hasty decisions.I am an Algerian Muslimah, in my culture you are expected to marry young. Growing up I never wanted to do so, but now at the age of 20 I am more than ready to do so. People brush you off as naive fools, but why? If at the age of 16, you are mature enough to make the decision to have sexual intercourse, what is the appropriate age of consent for marriage???

Cinderella
i think every 1 is different and we will all find our own 'right time' at the right point in our own lives.

I got engaged when I was 18 to be then boyfriend who was 19. People thought we were just silly kids and didn't take us seriously. We got married on July 10th 2008, 4 years later and have never been happier. Young people should wait but ultimately if they think its the right thing to do and they feel ready then what the problem? Even though I am now 23 I still get stick about being married so young.

I'm 23 and married. My husband is 25. We got together in 2006, and within 9 months were engaged and owned a house together. We lived together and spent a year and a half planning the wedding, allowing us plenty of time to get used to concept of being married. We both come from parents with successful marriages. His parents married at the age of 18 and my parents have been married for 28 years. We have no plans for children as yet and we're both working on our careers. I think even though I'm young, I have found my soulmate and after a few failed long-term relationships during my teens and university years, I knew he was 'the one' after our first date. I know we can go the distance as our arguments are rare, and usually end up in giggles after we know how silly we're being over insignificant issues. I think people are too quick to divorce instead of trying to make things work, and divorce is becoming too much of an everyday occurance. I don't agree with divorce as I believe in marriage being a lifetime contract, and I know I've found the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

HelloI am 24 and currenlty have been married for just under a year. Me and my husband have been together for around 9 years and have been engaged for around 5. Getting engaged was both of our decision and we both decided that we would have a long engagement and not rush into anything. Our wedding day was fantastic and wouldn have changed it for the world. I do think young people do take getting engaged for granted and do it so they do not loose there partner. Married is an important chapter in a relationship and should not be something which you rush into. Thanks Kimberley
