1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
What next for VP?
VP Records in Queens, NY
Listen to the documentary
Dancehall has never been as big or popular as it is right now – and it’s a small family record business which put it on the map.
1Xtra tracks 25 years of VP Records' success - from the label's roots in 70s Jamaica to its hyped status now in New York.

Listen to Elephant Man bigging up Will Smith, Vybz Kartel putting Sean Paul in his place and Buju Banton on what he thinks of VP.

And if you want to catch the VP anniversary party that went down in Miami, click 1Xtra's Dancehall section.
How come Sean Paul has had the most international success over other more established Jamaican artists? How long do you reckon the dancehall hype will last?  What do you reckon to Vybz Kartel’s comments in the documentary on Sean Paul and Elephant Man?

BZE
Sean Paul, bottom line, is a good artist. Think back to the days before he exploded, everyone knew he would make some moves in Dancehall, of course not to the level he is or was. But most importantly, he is very marketable. He has the "look" that a lot of American Fans like. I live in the States and many people asked me if Sean Paul was British because Jamaicans do not typically look like that. Although he is not as talented as Beenie Man, exciting as Elephant Man, or lyrically gifted as Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul is a good recording DJ. Period.

no doubt, elephant man is the numba 1 dancehall artist, sean paul is a pop singer man!

Fi mi sean paul is not a dancehall singa!!! he is a commercial performa!!! Fi mi, a dj as elephant man or bounty killer are more representative fi di dancehall. Even if they make tunes fi commercial they keep making some underground and hardcore tunes not the same fi sean paul.

Very interesting to hear Vybz Kartel talking about his decision for Greensleeves Records. In my opinion, Greensleeves is way better than VP Records because they've got the trendsetting riddims.

Sayf JJ i agree wid ya. Sean Paul put it back on da map but if it werent 4 all his tunez wid all da commercial rnb people he wudnt b big ya get me it only bcos all da r'n'bsterz hav bigged him up. I dunno if it tha dancehall hype will last but i fink if sum english ppl had a go at doin da dancehall stylee n dey sound hevy den it wud b ere 2 stay bcos da english will bk dem up. Typez ov musik only stay at da top if ppl from different partz ov da world hav a go at makin der own version or xact same fing. But den agen thtz jus my opinion...

dancehall will always be around. Just not this fad right now.

shekira
i think dancehall is massive and i love it

Aches
Dancehall has come of age and 1Xtra is definitely making it happen. IT'S HERE TO STAY!! Only wish we had stations in Canada like this one.

JJ
in my opinion sean paul's success is due to his accessibility to many different types of people - his music is more on a pop tip than dark dancehall, and his collabarations with rnb people have put him out there too.
