1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Toasting soundsystems
What have soundsystems done for the black music scene?
Listen to the documentary
Without soundsystems we might not have reggae, soul, dancehall, drum & bass, garage or grime.
And sounds have led the way for the largest street party in Europe: the Notting Hill Carnival.

How has the soundsystem changed the face of black music in the UK? How did toasting begin and how has the role of the MC developed? 1Xtra's Mike Anthony finds out...

Hear from the big sounds like Saxon, Soul II Soul and Good Time's Norman Jay alongside MCs Shystie and Dizzee Rascal.
Do you think black music would have survived without the soundsystem? What makes a good sound to you?

Sound systems are equipment.
And good equipment helps, but without the artists, the producers, the promoters, the people themselves we wouldn't have our sound. More power to the people!

soundsystems were the source of my musical education.

Listen!
Shystie and Dizzee Rascals music is not "Black Music". The music they specialise in creating and peforming is mostly garage. If garage has to be given a race it would have to be multi-cultural. Most peple in london who actually listen to garage music regularly or are involved in it will realise that there are many sucessful MCs DJs and producers - ie dj cameo who just won best newcomer dj at the sidewinder awards.

Garage, drum and bass and lots of other music has grown mainly from radio... the most sucessful raves are advertised hard on radio because it easily reaches a large audience... from these raves... artists are picked/noticed by labels.... Am I talking rubbish?

its really good to see some recognition for the work people put into the systems we have today which create our turntables and the microphones we use.

i think soundsystems have helped black music so much over the years. if it wasnt for soundsystems there would be no notting hill carnival.
