1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
The beautiful struggle
Matt Shrivington
Speaker
In Sierra Leone artists are using their albums to protest about the way their country is being run. Can it make any difference?
The country is still recovering after 11 years of a brutal civil war.

1Xtra's Rodney P returns to Africa after last performing there in 1993 to find out how rappers and musicians are helping to rebuild the nation.

Here artists how best selling artists like Daddy Saj, Emerson and Jimmy B are holding the government to account for their actions.

Can Sierra Leone's fortunes change just from music?
Can music really influence politics? Are there any musicians that have inspired you to get involved in campaigns? Which UK or US artists do you think are putting out protest music that changes things?

I am a very happy man today, to know that there are people out here who care about what is going on in my beloved country. When you talk about our issues in a music site, it goes a long way than just mentioning it in a foreign office website. Thank you very much and please continue with the good work.

This has to be one of the best documentaries I've ever listened to on the radio. Heartfelt, Insightful and a clear picture of life in Sierra Leone through it's past, musical present and future.

The bit on the amputees brought tears to my eyes and I'll have to read more about it. Reminds me of the Rwandan tragedy and the need for grassroot building to avoid this sort of thing. The football bit cracked me up. It's amazing the reach of the English Premiership.

We are spoilt over here. The part on the diamond trade has got me thinking about the Kanye west tune differently. What part do we in the west play in the promoting these civil strifes across the globe in our search for material satisfaction?

Rodney P u're outdone yourself mate and this will form part of ur BBC legacy.

To the people of Sierra Leone, peace and one love. The future is now.

THANKS 2 d 1xtra kru 4 covering the beautiful struggle dan b faced in ma country SL. Tho not born there - 'me nah Sah Lone titty' lol through n through and I'm so proud dat artists such as Emerson and Jungle Leaders are using their music to represent the voice of the new generation.

Our country is overun by corruption and typical African mentalism where there is disregard for people's labour, further disregard for the law and money rules over the mind -hence why when artists such as Emerson come along and publicly critisise the government for their lack of leadership and progress in rebuilding the country.

They are running scared as we the people arent gonna kick back and watch our country get ruined even further. How can Sierra Leone be so full of diamonds and minerals and natural produce that we are still one of the poorest countries in the world?

It just doesn't make sense - hence why we need to back our artists by not only purchasing their music but by changing our attitude - we are the first to complain that nothings bein done in the country however what are WE doing to help?

As for now, let's keep the hope n music alive - its real action not talk thats gonna save the country.
