I think the use of slang is fine in everyday speech. However, it is disturbing that many people have no grasp of grammar or how to construct a sentence. You only have to look at the first two entries of this debate.

I believe it is acceptable to use colloquial language as with formal words, it is a form of expression. However, we should not get caught up in 'words' which do not affect one directly but instead concentrate on words which we take for granted such as the word picnic. Does any one have have a clue where this word derives from? I will educate you... During slavery times: to Pick a N. I do not like the word and find it very disturbing when it is used among peers but, it has now become a slang word. Do you think this is acceptable slang?

I think BIG D is totally wrong. Firstly has he listened to the classic Jay Z debut Reasonable Doubt? There is no fast rapping on that, all the songs on there benifit from Jays slow jazzy style- a trait of his. Arguably the only fast rap Jay has ever layed is Jigga Wot? Jay has always been very commercial, he did not change his style in a vain attempt to seek popularity, this was already his style. Represent ya'll Jay to the Z. Big D is right in one respect when it comes to Jay. Cats have to find a style which suits them, which they are comfortable with and which they can excell at.

Slang is just another way of identifying you and yours from the other people around you. It's a tribal thing. You gotta know the lingo to be accepted. In Ireland you get a mix of traditional slang, US/UK borrowed aswell as the mix between rural and inner city dialects! wicked man!
Bump 'n' Grime
There's nothing wrong with artists using Jamaican/US/English/Irish/Chinese or any other nationality's slang. It has to mean something though. What's the point in using US slang if you're from Luton?? That would'nt be representing your own environment (aswell as being un-original). The only reason artists such as snoop use slang is because that's what they've been told to say by their producers/ghost writers etc. The beauty of being a low-profile artist is that u get to say what you want when you want.
Easy fellas, and keep it fresh.

I've heard Davina McCall and a local BBC presenter use the 'Fo Shizzle' statement, and I'm wondering if they would use the same phrase if they knew what it meant.

A lot of critics have argued that in our present culture and society the English language is becoming devalued due to hip hop street slang and shortened words in text and e-mails. However, I think that our language is expanding in new and exciting ways, how else did we come from Shakespeare's language to what we speak today? I come from Oxford so speak correctly most of the time and have been labelled posh, but a lot of words including 'inabit' instead of 'see ya' have infiltrated my everyday speech. My mum always tells me off for using words like this, but when your just around your friends and family do you really have to speak proper English?

Slang and accent, put together they make your vocal persona. The thing that instantly seperates one MC from another is their voice. If UK mc's are gonna STAY Uk, they need their own slang. P's not G's man.
loz
well i use u.s slang and so do all my mates so why cant we do what we want do what we feel you no what i mean
JACKSPAID
SLANG TO ME IS MORE LESS A LESSER ADAPTATION OF THE INNER RENAGADE OF THE HUMAN PHYCHE OF URBAN AND POOR PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD REALLY THAT PART OF YOU THE DOSENT WAN TO BE TOLD HOW TO BE WHILE LIVING WITHIN IN THE CONSTRIANTS OF A GOLDEN RULE EVERYTHING ELSE IS GOING TO FAR MAINSTREAMS CHANGE AS GENERATIONS DO NATRALLY.MABEY AS MUCH IN A FAMILY INNER STRUCTURE AS AN OUT SOCIAL STRUCTURE.

I THINK IT'S A SOCIAL CHANGE REMENANT TO AN AMEBA GROWING OUT OF CONTROL.IT'S HARD TO TELL WITCH WAY IT WILL TAKE US

i dont think u can copyright phrases well if u can i will copyright the words yes and no pay me now please

I think alot of UK mc's have skills but they are sometimes hard to understand. Reason being, to me is that they rap too fast and bunch too many words in the rhyme. Jay Z used to rap fast and the older cats around his way told him to slow it down. When he did he began to make his loot from the rap game.
sacred
its alrite to hav US influence in a UK artist coz hiphop is originated from the US, n the majority of commercial hip hop in the UK is from the US n e way. as long as u stay tru to yourself its real. no fake accents please, but more poeple can relate to the commercial US slang so i think its alrite to use it, its only words.
Big D
I think that the UK mc's should atleast have one or two US formatted songs on there cd. Its just like how we cater to certain crowds. You got you rnb/ rap songs with whatever rnb artist and those songs are for the ladies. You got your harcore fans, etc. You have to please everyone because it shows that you are trying to reach all audiences and that you are not 1 dimentional. Just like you have to have a commercial joint too.
Tai Monoup
I'm aspiring vocalist. Looking at the history of hip-hop now being performed in a true UK dialect; does anyone feel that one day r'n'b/neo-soul will eventually be sung cockney, ie pop, indie. Also, found it ironic that the presenter of the documentary had a US twang.

I was brought up to speak with a neutral accent but live in South Yorkshire so got called 'posh' & 'snob' even though my parents were brassic. (Boracic lint, my mother is from Portsmouth & Dad is Polish). It depends who I'm talking to but I end up copying words that I like so especially in a social group or after a drink I get broader in accent. I think i sound like a fishwife when this happens but I like stuff like, 't-boned' (ina car accident) 'off his cake' (got from a lad from Milton Keynes once), a bit spicy (rough place), bint (young overconfident lass), but I reckon we use stuff without even knowing it out of habit.

I've noticed that in north Manchester some adults address children and young people as "queen".
