A special 1Xtra and Radio 1 investigation has found that thousands of young people are rejecting harder drugs like heroin and crack.

Instead under 25s are more likely to use so-called 'party drugs' like cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy.

The drugs are often taken on nights out along with large amounts of booze.

With such a radical shift in the drug taking habits of young people, are the treatment services available to help the addicts.

And to what extent does the current drug policy need to change to tackle the problem?

Young people tell their stories alongside The National Treatment Agency and professional health workers.

What drugs are around your area? Do you or would you do drugs? Would you know where to get treatment if you or your friends needed it?

Everyones going on recently like this is something new, its only been brought to the governments view by programmes like skins, teenagers have been taking recreational drugs for years, my parents did the same when they were young and so did my grandparents, i dont think that there has been a rise in the use of them altho im not a professional so i can only go on what i see myself, i do use them occasionaly and it doesnt affect my normal life, i smoke weed on a daily basis and that also causes no problems for me, i do intend to stop one day but whilst im free and independant then its up to me how i live my life, im not harming anyone but myself and thats my choice and i can confidently say that im not physicaly addicted to anything, its all mental addictions that in time i will stop, things change in peoples lives and at the stage im at its all about enjoying myself, once i hit my mid 30's or have children then it will be time for me to act in a more mature manner, until then im gonna have as much fun as i can, with or without the help of drugs

I am a 21 year old male and Cannabis as well as other drugs (MDMA, Ketamine, Cocaine, Opiates, Benzos, GBL, Legal Highs etc.) have damaged my brain. Despite what is said the only drug out of all of those which I can't stop is CANNABIS. I have witnessed first hand a dozen or more people have got messed up in the head from Cannabis alone. At the end of the day it is down to moderation, anything once in a while is OK yet anything taken everyday will screw you up.

'Recreational Drugs' are pandemic and that includes tobacco and alcohol (perhaps the biggest killers). Society deserves the truth. All drugs used by society (legal and illegal) need to be regulated and taxed. It is drug abuse not use that causes social problems. If an adult makes the choice to take alcohol or cocaine it is going to happen and society should accept it and tax it to pay for support down the line - like alcohol abuse. Burying our head in the sand and spending billions world wide to try and prevent it is futile and funds criminal gangs. Why give gangs the profits? Drugs are here to stay and we must do the best we can with the circumstances not make criminals of those who choose to abuse their own bodies. Users are not funding crime, the government is by making the lengths dealers will go to much more dramatic and profitable. Lets wise up and face our responsibilities as a modern society and elect a government brave enough to take the necessary decisions. Maybe I'm running ahead of myself here - one step at a time - let's democratically elect a leader first or maybe even that's too much to ask!

The problem in this country is not just about funds, but more about how the media portray drugs, as they are not doing enough to discourage people from taking drugs and to promote positive, alternative role models. In Italy, where I come from, the situation is quite different: drugs are always described as an extremely serious problem, something which would always end up interfering or ruining your life completely in one way or another, and that's the way it should be. The same, of course, applies to alcohol consumption, which is out of control in this country.

i think drugs like class as and heroin and crack should be banned or someone try to ban them but there always be around i think because people import and make theese things i think herion and crack are worse because they make you greedy for more like for example begging for money for there crack.I think cannasis is harmless and calms you down when you have had a bad day just like when people sit down and drink a glass of wine in there evening . if there was no more drink there would be no violence. i think cannabis should become legal! i love it and big up and warranty crew xxx

im a jamaican was living in England for some time and the way how i see some parents allowed thier kids to smoke weed and class A drugs,we as kids growing up over here would have to hide and pray our parents don't find out or else we would be in big trouble.Don't get me wrong there are a lot of drug usre in J.A. but they are mostly adults and very few children not like over in the U.K. where almost 3/4 of school kids smoke weed or used hard drugs.

I used drug heavily for about 4 years, between the ages of 15 and 19. I was on speed all of the time and ketamine quite alot. Every weekend and most Wednesdays I took pills and/or acid. All of this was fine I had no bad experiences appart from the paranoia you sometimes get from staying up for over a week. I sold drugs to mates to raise cash. When I could no longer afford drugs (and when my family's nagging became too much) I quit, completely, in one go. Most people who take drugs do so because it is enjoyable, not because it is addictive. Now I trip occasionally and that is it. The government should legalize drugs since if people want to take them then they will, the government is not going to stop that, look at the prohibition in America. Legalized drugs would be better quality (safer), the gov would have more control over how much and of what people were taking, there would be at least 50% less people in prison and they could tax them and offset that against treatment costs. Since people are shying away from crack and skag this is the ideal time to do it.

All this is about saving the lifes of our young people, myself I know that I would have give anything for my son to receive treatment for his painkiller addiction but we didn't know that it was his drug. We found out after he passed away May 8, 2008 that he was supposed to get methadone treatment. So you see without knowing, he died all alone in his room at 23 years old. The justice system knew but no one never tried to tell us even after he od in custody a year earlier. We never was even giving a chance to help him. That is why it's so important to have places where our youths feel comfortable enough to get in touch with proper people that may help them. Today I only wish that the judicial system will tell the next of kin what's happening so that family can at least try to help their sons and daughters. If someone in our situation read this please I would like to get involve in changing those rulesl

Drugs are everywhere and so easily obtained,i no lots of people that smoke weed,do ecstacy and take cocaine,People feel this is the way to live life to the fullest, want to try new things,I cant talk as have done some drugs, but it is scary knowing that you arnt in control of your body on drugs such as ecstacy. But its life and I dont think it will ever change, more drugs will come out and the effects encourage people to take them. big up 1extra i love u!

The area in which I grew up with was full of families on benefits. From a young age I remember going round friends houses and their parents smoked weed. I was aware from around 8 years old that my own parents smoked weed. Im 17 now and they still do. By the time I was 13 years old all the black boys in my area were even consuming weed or selling it. A lot of them still do. I smoke weed myself but yet I would never blame my parents and those around me for my own actions. It was a choice I made when I was 14 years old. I enjoy doing it and I don't see anything wrong with it. I live in North London now and it seems that everywhere I go it's the norm for people to smoke weed, and in great amounts. People could call me a drug addict but I don't look at it like that. I've never bought weed. I do it socially. I enjoy the feeling. It

Cannabis is fine as long as its smoked in regulation. A couple of times a week will not hurt. Its people who abuse it give the drug a bad name because it should be legalised or at least down graded. If everyone was stoned there'd be no violence.
