1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Monie Love
Monie Love
Monie Love was the first British female rapper to make it big in America. Born in Battersea, South London, she burst onto the hip hop scene in the late 1980’s. Have you got love for Monie?
Helping establish the roots of UK hip hop, Monie Love moved to New York, where she went on to work with legends of the game including Queen Latifah, De La Soul, and the Jungle Brothers.

Renowned for her lethal delivery, and sassy lyrics, her solo records both received Grammy nominations.

As part of Black History Month, 1Xtra's Sarah Love brings you her story.
Did you know the Monie Love story? Did she pave the way for other artists? Is she the mother of UK hip hop?

Monie Love is one of the tightest lyricist that came. When she was lettin the mic have it on Ladies first , that was it and that was all. She came Correct. I always wanted her and Left eye to do something much love to the Queen , I'm just sayin Monie love and Left eye is the hardest females to ever shoot the gift on the air waves. And trip this ......I didn't even know babygirl was from over seas.

Big up Monie! She's been a massive contributor to UK/US hip hop no doubt. BUT! in my opinion Slick Rick remains the most influential UK artist, who to this day still get sampled by US artists. Ladi Dadi........need I say more....
