Take a look at the current England cricket squad and you're unlikely to see a black face amongst the line-up.
From street level to test level, cricket is losing both black players and black fans.

Is cricket in England a white sport dominated by class?

Ashes legend Gladstone Small and cricketer Vikram Solanki talk to 1Xtra's Manny Norte.

Why is this typically British sport struggling on the popularity stakes?
Is cricket a white sport for the privileged? What's it going to take to get more black faces in cricket? Will cricket ever become more popular than football with young sports fans?

I am a sikh 14 yr old and i just wanna ask sumfing. Im not bragging but i am a very good all-rounder in cricket.

I want to play at a international level and have been told that i am good enough. I can bowl leg-spin, off-spin, and fast balls, and am an abled batsmen. The problem is i dont know even how to get to an international stage. I dont play for any1 because i dont know the path. Plz let me know the route to international cricket for a talented 14yr old cricketer.

PS: If i need to be scouted, what do i have to do to get scouted by a county.

how can it be said that cricket is a white sport???

devon malcolm one of the best fast bowlers we have seen in this country for a long time, and the fact u say its a rich mans sport is ridiculus, i used to play with a stick and tennis ball.

u don't need money or even a pitch to play. it's a national game that welcomes all back grounds no matter what colour the skin or your back ground

The next cricket world cup is the west indies.

cricket takes too long....at least footie is an hour and a half

I dont fink that cricket is only disliked by black people. i think in general most young people prefer to watch or play footy or rugby, which is more excitin then cricket!!!

DJ Cookie
i think this is absolutely taken out of context - we r always moaning about they isn't this and that in our society - re assimilation and interaction is needed - our interests must be in our hearts but if u want to represent britain u will have praisers and doubters in everything you do.

in the media today too many people believe the hype and we shouldn't - whether it is sport, media, music etc.

regardless what u should be allowed to do whatever u want to do - as long as it is in reason. there is always a debate in civilised democratic society and things do get out of hands more than often as we see in our world today whether it is nationalised sport representation or not.

No way I play in the leagues and there are bare asian and black players in essex! When you play a team with a high ethnic ratio then you know your in for a beating cos the asians and black players at club level are heavy

Amar Budhia
ive played cricket for warwickshire ccc youth team and still play at club level. I personally think that it isnt a white mans game! i have found that there isnt a huge interest in cricket amoung the young black generation in the uk.

id say back in the day when cricket was a honerable sport and the west indians were at the best there was a wide interest among the black west indian culture as it is huge in the west indies.

other sports now such as football and basketball come across to black people as more fun and feel they can progress more in these areas.

how can anyone say that cricket is a white sport?? look at some of the all time greats. in a list of anyones top 10 would probably be Viv Richards. and in a lsit of anyones top 3 would proberbly be Sir Gary Sobers.

The fact that there is no english black player at present is unclear, but look at a team a few years back, and it was hard to see an England attack without a black fast bowler such as DEvon Malcolm or phil defretas.. come on i mean one of the most dominearing cricket teams of all time was the West Indies.!!..

I think cricket is becoming a lot more appealing towards young people now, because they are understanding the complexities of the game. The strategy behind a great game of cricket. Real sports fans are becoming tired of the money side of football, and the constant bickering between managers and players. They are loosing their grip on reality, and becoming soap opera types.. who run around wth wads of cash in a very arrogant manner, and if truth be told, some of them have got nowhere near the talent and commitment of say a freddie Flintoff, wen he pulls on an england Jersey.. And please can we have less of this black vrs White thing!!

mark
there are plenty of black people playin cricket cos i play against black teams every week, but they see the money the differnece money and compare it to football and they play football instead

Nabil
cricket is a sport that any one can play but cricket doent get played in England thats why do you dont see a black persion play cricket i think if cricket does get played more thren foot ball then you could see a black persion in cricket

Laz
Cricket isn't a white sport, it's just a rich person's sport. As most black people aren't rich, then they are less likely to enjoy cricket. It's as simple as that, and I'm black myself.

pigeon
maybe in the uk its a class ting, but u only gotta look at india to see its a sport for da masses!
