1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Jam Master Jay story
Jam Master Jay
Who killed Jam Master Jay? Like the murders of Tupac and Biggie, nobody has ever been convicted.
On 30th October 2002 the Run DMC DJ was shot and killed in his recording studio in Queens, New York.

Rev Run, DMC, Chuck D, Missy Elliot, hip hop cop Derrick Parker and UK rapper Ty take us through the life and death of Jam Master Jay.

From his DJ'ing with the fat gold rope chains and shell-toes, to his A&R work with 50 Cent to the fatal shooting.
What do Run DMC mean to you? What’s your favourite track? Does hip hop mean murder? Leave your thoughts tributes to Jam Master Jay here.

Technically, he was blown out of the water by the DJ's who came after him, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Cash Money etc. However, JMJ was the classic block-party DJ, whipping up the crowd with simple but effective scratching and breakbeat cutting, just like back in the day. A line can be drawn right through his style back to the pioneers of hip-hop and heady days in the four boroughs of New York."From Queens came Kings!". Indeed.

PIONEER OF HIP HOP RIP JAM MASTER

The first ever gig I went to was RUN DMC & Beastie Boys at Manchester Apollo and it was outstanding. I also managed to get to RUN DMC's last tour and got to meet JMJ and he was a very genuine person, with knowledge and opinions on most things. RUN DMC were a very important band for Hip Hop as they were the first to Rap band to be played on MTV and the miusic is still known today. JMJ and RUN DMC will be remembered forever. RIP JMJ

Craig Newman
Run DMC had the ability to create very catchy, likeable Hip-Hop tracks that appealed to music fans, no matter what their preference in music. They also rocked harder than any other act when they performed live. 'Sucker MC's' is still a bangin' track and I currently use the song as my Ring tone.RIP Jam Master Jay

I was fortunate enough to have seen them play on eof their last gigs in England. Truly one of the greats of Hip-Hop, they knew exactly how to work the crowd. No more so than during the song Mary, Mary. Every time I hear that I think of three of them working together on stage, sounds a bit lame but they were a real team and people should take note of that today.

In 1986 I saw Run DMC play Brixton Academy. Jay opened the set alone, cutting Peter Piper and the place erupted. I was 14. Nostalgic times. Run DMC were like the goodwill ambassadors of hip hop. Everyone loved them. That's why Jay getting shot was so shocking...

Vic
Like Chris Rock said, they could find Saddam Hussain in a whole in the ground, but they can't find who shot Tupac in Las Vegas...Go figure. RIP JMJ

Shane Ford
I can't honestly say that I was the biggest fan of JMJ or Run DMC, but what he did for the music industy at the time was phenominal, the repocussions of his actions can be seen today and hopefully will continue to be present in music in the future. RIP JMJ.

Without RUN-there would have been a missing generation of hip hop loving animals all over the globe. He's one of the few idols who will be dearly missed by his fans and the industry
