1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Islamic hip hop

Muslim rapper Nomad
Listen to the documentary
Muslim rap is big business with annual sales in excess of $1.8bn in America alone.
How is the Islamic faith delivering the message from Allah through rap?

1Xtra's Iyare talks to Muslim rappers challenging traditional views like Mecca 2 Medina, Napoleon from Tupac's Outlawz and Jurassic 5.

Why is Islamic hip hop becoming such an attraction?
Should hip hop be used to deliver the message? Should Muslim rappers like Mos Def keep religion out of their music? Which other Muslim rappers should we be watching?

Jay Storm
I'm a muslim rapper aswell, before I used to use explicit lyrics in my music but later on I learnt that it is gunnah so I stopped and started rapping about everyday life and things that are worthwhile to rap about

WHY IS THE AMERICZNS GETTING JEALOUS

In my opinion, if our young generation says/sings some words of islam/shariya by following islamic hip-hop in everyday life whether in homes or on streets or @ work instead of listening and singing nude/lusty words of hollywood/bollywood rappers, I think there should be no harm in Islamic Hip-Hop.......as long as they do purely for Islam rather than thier own financial and fame interests.

As a muslim,i think hip hop is haram if the message you are sending is against sunnah but if its within d ambit of sunnah is right.because hip hop is a song and song is halal and permissible in islam if its not against the sunnah.

Sajida
k, islamically 'speaking', yeh, its not permissible for the reasons that there are instruments other than tabl (drums)used, but in this day and age, its a way of keeping kids off streets and have them still mingle with the 'cool crowds'. In other words, they're not alienated... Personally, i'd rather have brothers and sisters 'rapping' about islam on their way home rather than *lalala... coz im a m****ing P.I.M.P." or "d'you wana lick lick lick lick my lollypop" if you get my point. Im a Palestinian living in London, muslim-hiphop may not be a very "traditional" way of inducing islamic awareness, but it works just fine for muslims in the west. But there are a lot of MC's that rap without music too! take 'the brotherz' for instance! There is nothing wrong with muslim hiphop, if its halal then we howling it, if it aint, then we allowing it!

Great documentary 1Xtra! I am from Dubai and I love Muslim rap. And I think it is important that people in the West know that hip hop is no longer only coming out of the streets of London or Harlem, we have rappers coming out of the streets of Gaza and Lebanon right here from the war-torn streets of the Middle East. Because hip hop is so beautiful it is about spitting the truth and delivering the message of your life to the people. There are plently of Arab or Muslim rappers who are coming up and i think it is important to note that although they respect and look up to people like 2pac, Biggie, Talib Kweli etc etc they are not emulating them they are bringing there own style :-D Thanks Mona

Islamic hip hop is a way of expressing oneself in a halaal way, where the the way is it is expressed is a way in which muslim youth can relate to in thier everyday lives.

shireen
Growing up in Harlem submitting your self to the lord, spreaing peace, and education and soul and spirit in an environment of youths going down the wrong paths, if any kind of rap promotes peice and being God children. Let de man b herd, lt de man rap, let him spread him love and love for a good life. Hip hop is a way of life, to be powerful, educated, open minded, embracing yourself and your heritage, fighting through the on going struggle in the hood, if thats what islamic hip wants to spread, i say LET DE MAN SPEAK . LET DE MAN BE HERD.

Allhamdolilah..Great work...Modern sufi!

hip hop music and islam have allways been linked. in my opinion hip hop music is the perfect platform in which an artist can deliver their message raw and unedited.its so accessible and should be used to spread the message of islam(peace) if an artist is muslim then it is his duty to represent and 'witness' to some extent.
