1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Hip hop in the holy land
DAM
Listen to the documentary
"He's an MC, I'm MC. We're all doing music. If we're Arabs - if we're Jews - that doesn't matter"rapper Quami De La Fox.
Ty checks out the scene in Israel where the army runs the main radio station and the playlist is all Britney and rock.

Hip hop has been going down in the background until now: Crews made up of Jews and Arabs are grabbing the mic to express themselves on the war that dominates their lives.

On both sides of the political hating the artists stand up for channelling rage into music and say it's more constructive than the politicians' solution.
Can hip hop bring the politically divided groups together? Or does it provide just another means of fighting, with rap rather than guns?

Truman
people are way too ignorant these days to really listen to each other wether hip hop can bring peeps together i very much doubt

Josh
Hip hop has the capacity to penetrate the minds of the youth. Let’s focus our attention on the next generation and hope that over time issues can be resolved.

Jennifer
Brilliant documentary. Music DOES change people and minds, as does the media. When the tide is strong enough and enough people are talking about peace and reconcilliation, the wave will eventually crash, and the message will get out.

M, Bedford, UK
I think it's a much better way of expressing yourselves rather then turning to guns and violence!

shahzad
im sorry but as much as every1 loves hip hop it can never bring palestians and israelis together!! you ask why?? you go there and see whats going on then you come back and argue with me

Melissa
GO SUBLIMINALL!!

Rob Clayton
Whilst hip-hop can allow the coming-together of 2 warring sides on a local level, to suggest it could bridge such a huge divide on such a complicated issue is naive and ultimately futile

Rachel E
As an Israeli i myself are very into Israeli music. I dont think that its another way of fighting its just a way for us to express ourselves and say what we wana say. I love Subliminal, Booskills, Kele 6 and Shi 360 especially! Its definately not going to get peace for us! A bit more complex than that.. It is going to take alot more than music to save our land.

Buzz
Some seem to think that world peace comes pre-packaged in the record shops these days.

Rap, as with all music, has the power to influence and empower-listenin to this stuff aint gonna solve problems, but it opens our eyes. Then its up to the common people to act on it.

Music is a catalyst- not a cure.

harry
Music/ Hip Hop is able to bring people together in the good times and bad times... Hip Hop especially its such a diverse genre which appeals to so many people these days....

connie
i think it's great that ppl are using other methods than violence to express their political views other than with violence! music is great!

timsta brown, munich
yo i think it can to a certain amount...but all in all "music is the healing force of the universe" as gilles peterson said ones. peace out!

Pavan
hiphop has brought people together from different countries and cultures. hiphop knows no political divisions and should be kept that way! It brings tolerance, respect and culture in a different form than before and should not be criticized!

E-boggie
hip hop is for all people. Just get the flo'the grove, and that bangin'bottom.Bass in your face then no one can no one can stop you yo.!

Hamada
Neither music nor politics can solve the Palestinians' problem. Only God can... Peace. Hamada

PAUL SOOALO AKA L.P
Hip hop is to express feelings with certain styles.A good alternative instead of picking up a gun.I ve seen hip hop change many lives.

Miz da biz
music, art, theatre are the only way to get around the political stuff. the political solution will take ages to sort out, and so until then, young palestinians and israelis need a channel of expression.

Bobby B
Antithesis is a great example of british rap relating to british jewry and their thoughts and feelings towards israel and politics

Rob Bradstock
The conflict in israel is obviously at a much more complex level than that which hip hop can 'solve' however music as mentioned is definitely a tool which can be utilised in order to promote peace and communication

Sam Cohen
hip hop in israel is brilliant. I have both subliminal albums n they are great and the messika - metziot meduma album which is also really good. It bridges the gap between divided people.

Desa
Lets stop kidding ourselves shall we! what like biggy and 2pac became buddies after communicating via rap! please!

Karin Kloosterman
There are a couple of great stories written about Israel hip hop in the Rolling Stone by journalist Loolwa Khazzoom for those would like to know more.

Tom Simpson
There's no harm in it, but I think awareness needs to be raised around the world about the problems people are facing in developing countries. Accessible rappers need to show the masses what's going. Xzibit's new album has a track with a verse from the perspective of an Iraqi child! Stuff like that can only help, the UK has a very very bright hope in an MC called Lowkey.

Danny
Hip hop gives an alternative voice where Palestinian kids are normally forced to watch MTV style pop videos of hate on state TV. It's a small step forward but a voice of freedom for all

louise
i believe that nothing should be quickly disregarded just for the reason that it has not worked before. Music is a prime example of expression of emotion and therefore it has endless possibilities. It may not be a revolutionary movement but it may be a begining of something that could just have a spill over effect.

sharon
I don't think hip hop can solve the problems in israel, it is a complex and deep rooted situation although it may help get people together for a common interest and it is better to fight with words rather than guns. There needs to be understanding, tolerance of other people and their religions, co operation and forgiveness for past conflicts before peace can exist in the israel.

ME
Yo, yo. I'm down with the sounds, but this was a typical "story of hope" in which the music is the hero and we know where it's going from the beginning. When are we gonna open up hip-hop up, beyond oppositions and get to some questions that aren't looking for straight answers? Like the genious of Ali G, he repositions hip-hop as insider/outsider.

cyot patel
music feeds ur soul...let it now feed ur brains

lisa
what about kele 6 and October ? they r the best ! subliminal doesnt know how to make good music ..

musole salikumbi-from Zambia
Music, be it hip hop or RnB, is not a solution to these political divisions.

Farzand Ahmed
This conflict is so deep-rooted that it would take a lot more than just music to achieve peace.

Tony
Yes, as hip hop has always represented the disenfranchised. But regardless, nothing else is working, why not try this?

Hamza
Seems like a good idea, but the young Palestinian generation has not been affected nearly as much as their parents who were kicked out of their homes. Also with daily incursions Palestinians haven’t got time for hip hop. I would love to see this work but there will never be peace until the Israelis get someone who can communicate with the Palestinians like the artists in this Documentary.

Angela Reece
People should stop automatically connecting rap with violence. Rapping is a form of expression like any other. The next generation should be allowed their say, in whatever way they want to say it. They can't do much worse than the 'politicians' anyway.

Adam
I believe that sometimes music is able to deliver a message you would have otherwise ignored. I'l like to be optimistic and see this as a new channel of communication between people.

david sandler
good ida but gal-galatz (the radio station) is known for pioneering bands like dag na'chash, an ideological, peace-loving hip-op crew. iy's not all bad out there.
