Bobo Dreads: unravelling the truth
Robbo is called Kulcha Knox. It was taken in producer Bobby Kulcha Knox and Robbo hang out in Bobby Digital's studio
Listen to the documentary
Rastafari: You've probably heard of the religion - but how much do you understand about it?
A new consciousness is coming through in Jamaica's musical community. Bobo Dreads wear their locks under a turban and are known for their fundamentalism.

1Xtra's Robbo Ranx gets to the heart of the faith with a visit to Bull Bay Bobo Camp to meet its musicians.

Do they believe in strict female subordination? Listen and find out...
Tell us what you think of this documentary...

Empress Mariam Desert-Spalding
This documentary was an interesting reflection of the bobo culture from an outsider looking into a subculture which, due to the popularity of some reggae artist is attracting a considerable amount of attention. It is unfortunate that interest does not stem from interest in the ways of purification, love, honor, and respect projected by those bobos who maintain the livity (lifestyle) in its entirety. There are few bobos these days who maintain the livity 100%; many deviate from certain principles to fit their modern day way of living. The camp is a retreat for many bobos, even though there are some young people who pass through which one may observe engaging in unacceptable behavior out of ignorance and lack of sincerity. The camp forces a return to ital (natural)ways of life. the air, food, and water are pure, everyone blesses everyone, bredrin or sistren (brother or sister). For those of us living outside of the camp it is a welcome relief to be able to attend sabaath services in the tabernacle and attend roll call. It is great to eat with the bredrin and sistren after the sabaath fast is broken and reason with others. It is beautiful to see turbans and robes instead of brand names and form fitting attire. There is no special greeting for men which is seperate from that of women. Women are not oppressed. Those who feel oppressed are often those who came into the livity via a male partner instead of by way of their own research and conviction, hence they are blindly following behind men out of a desire to please them. It is true that bobo men are sought after by many non-bobo women. It is also true that there are many bobo bredrin who have relationships with women who are not bobo, therefore a person may feel that they know a bobo princess or empress when in fact they know the girlfriend of a bobo. Women are greeted as empress, priestess, and princess, and men as prophet, prince, and priest. These titles alone reflect the respect reserved for bobo women. Many fail to understand how true bobos remain so disciplined. True bobo women maintain this livity because they choose to do so. It was nice to hear that Empress Julie is still on the hill tending to guests of the EABIC.

Yea, satan works again, splitting ALL people who calling on YAH to cause confusion. It no matter what organisation people belong to, cos no organisation will be called as a whole, only INDIVIDUALS will be judged by YAH, one by one, taken or rejected. Still to learn it is probably ok to belong to an organisation until that time. Selah

empress
i enjoyed the the doc. I wish that it was longer,Ithink that Queen Omega's comment was just ignorant and it held no real value. What is wrong with being blessed this way? Why should a person risk being unclean because an empress doesn't up hold her principles. I believe she would be an empress that would still cook and dwell with her king at that time,FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THere is so much more to the order then what was spoken of in the doc. A person must seek knowledge for themselves and don't be mislead by people who don't seek true salvation. Blessed LOve

Empress JahAnn

Very good documentary indeed. To me, the whole Bobo movement is a fraud, so as Emmanuel, and most reggae artists who claim dem ah Bobo (capleton, sizzla..) are phony with no integritY and no Love . Instead of bringing more unity, Bobo advocate separation of people from different races.Personally, I see the concept of repatriation more as a spiritual thing, not geographical. (Mt) Zion is not to be found inna Africa or aethiopia but through personal salvation. Selah

Malik
Very Education, much respect goes out to all the Bobos. Sizzla is heavy!

Much respect for the DOC. I've known of Bobo and I say as long as youre not hurting yourself or others live your life. Big Ups to Rasta and all in I-nity, Unity and universal Harmony. Robbo 1 love

JahJah Warriror
I just want to send blessings and respect to Robbo for this documentary, I have known a long time about bobo hill, through artisits such as Sizzla, Capleton, Anthony B, as a European Rasta and moreover a White Rasta I have often faced backlash not from what I hate to term (traditional black rasta) but indeed other white people who tell me I can't be rasta because of my skin and so forth.

Many people find it difficult when I speak of Africa and the Holy Trinity because I think they feel threatened initially because they feel I should not be speaking such things. But as it says in the Kebra Negasa There's more than one kind of fish in the ocean and JAH come to free us all, is not a black thing or a white thing it's a conscious thing. I give thanks to the teachings of my African Bredda's who have seen past skin colour and seen straight to the heart, we as rasta don't deal with segregation but we do stand firm in our struggle.

We don't seek to alienate we seek to unite but often the media has unravelled our hard work and made us misunderstood.

It's a shame there were not more people like Robbo who went out there and sought the truth and I give thanks for his work.

DANNY DREAD
I REALLY ENJOYED THE DOC.... KEEP UP DA GOOD WORK....JAH BLESS

PRIEST ASUKILE ADIGUN ADOFO AKA, BOBO ADIGUN
Blessed love. Concerning queen omega's comments about the hand to heart blessing, the bobo gives it to all persons not just woman, it is queen omega who lacks understanding in this area. She like robbo should visit bobo hill and get her facts right bobo man and woman don't really hand shake or knock fist.

I for one have lived on bobo hill and i know their stance on reggae music, all the same i listened to this documentary and i never got any new understanding from it just the same old argument from when i was living on the hill.

But with that said bobo ashanti for me are still the greatest and most disciplined of all the rastafari structures.

charles ras kalapana

Respect to the Rastas!

Winston Crawford
Robbo Ranx not to be confused as a Bobo you did a very fair and balanced journalistic expose of the Bobos in Jamaica. I am a Jamaican and had I not had the up-bringing I had, I might have given this religion a try. At least I like the simpleness of the life. I perhaps would have left later though after understanding Bobos holy trinity. You did an outstanding job Robbo.

Hasan
I believe what rappers are doing it is good and keep it up, but today we face haevy criticism which i ask brothers & sisters to research and prove to other muslims about the issue of music, when we do music we should correct ourselves from halal and haram and as told by islam use Hikaam wisdom)as muhammad(saw)used hikaam and many styles of dawah and i think music is one way and good wisdom to give as dawah.

Dutchie
Respect to the Maximum to all Rastafari. Jah Jah soon come fi teach the people fi return us to Zion outta bondage. Respect.
