South Africa has the continent's most established hip hop industry.
In the third part of 1Xtra's Afropop documentary series, JJC travels south where acts like Zola, Godessa and Bongo Maffin run tings in the scene.

He explores how local hip hop fares in competition with other popular music styles like Kwaito.

Hear how South African artists face opposition from police and use their music to protest against political corruption and HIV/AIDS.
Do you listen to South African hip hop? Who are your favourite artists? What's the difference between rappers who use their music for protest and those who just celebrate their personal wealth?

I would just like to say that i loved the show and think these african artists are doing an amazing job. I would like to big up an Algerian rapper called Lotfi Double Kanon who has done so much for the hip hop scene in North Africa. I understand its difficult if you don't understand arabic because it will be hard to make sense of what he's saying but believe you me, the lyrical content is sick. His flow is equally fulfilling as well and he's a very BIG artist who is starting to break the french hip hop scene and is doing collabo wit an established French Rapper called Bouba! So watch out for this guy..

Wicked documentary, had to move to that "Soweto" track, that man had skills! Good job, top ratings!

Being an aspiring SA artist, my favourite rap artist now is Pro-Kid but I feel there is a gap in the art.

A lot of the rap artists who are releasing tracks in SA are all about e'kasi (ghetto), repping where they're from and how they're coming up in the world and making some changes... that's all fine and good with me!!!

The problem I have is when I stepped into the game repping the Burbs (suburbs) now everyone wants to hate on me?? I mean, I'm not trying to start anything, I give props where they are due, but if you want to bring it I'll bring it the only way I know how. I was raised in the Burbs, not my choice, but that's the way things were.

I'm just trying to get my paper like everyone else.... stack my cash, make music and let me be on my way. Holla Back!!!
