1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Expensive date?
Dating: Heidi Klum and Seal
How much of a battering does your wallet get when you go on a date?
The average cost of a date is £200 research for debit card Maestro has found. Is that what you're used to?

Most men want to look chivalrous and pay for dinner, but the women are coughing up the same on hairdos and sexy underwear.

What is it that adds up to £200? If a man spends £200 are you thinking he wants something in return?
What's the best date you've ever been on? Was it expensive? Tell us about your cheap dates too...

It's just too stupid and silly to spend 200 pounds on yr first date, after buying chicken & chips,if you don't like me,have it your way and bye! bye! bye!!!

brunnhilde
well, i went on a date last sunday afternoon. we went to the theatre and the tickets cost Euro 32 which we split...and dinner cost about Euro 25, which we split...and I had a brilliant time. he's a wonderful guy and I'd love to see him again. the moral of this story: a man's (or in my case, a woman's) worth lies in his character and not in his wallet!

We - ell... The last time I went out on a big date My underwear was brand new and bought for the occasion (cost £95) plus I'd had my hair cut and coloured(£160) everything waxed (eyebrows, legs, underarms and brazilian = £80)and a fake tan treatment, (£50) He paid for dinner (£80) drinks (£20)and a taxi both ways (£60) I can't imagine this is so very unusual for a special evening???

Big question - have ANY women spent £200 on a date, as it sounds like the men either pay, or they go dutch at worst.

badger
I quite often spend about this on a date. Add it up - dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant - bottle of wine or two - taxis to a nightclub - entry - drinks and then taxi home - you are unlikely to get much change from 200

Mike
It would be nice to be able to afford to spend £200 on a night out. Please remember most people do not get this much a week.

mark
went on a date the other day, and a meal in an indian restaurant came to £50 for the two, including a bottle of wine., paid for all drinks in a pub afterward, and the whole thing cost no more than about £70. £200 is overdoing it.

Cathy
These days £200 isn't that much, when you pay for meals, drinks and taxis it all adds up. When my boyfriend first took me out he showed up with perfume and flowers first, I didn't expect this all the time but it created a nice first impression, needless to say we're still together 7 years later.

Jacqz
Fair enough, I spend time & money getting ready, but I wouldn't expect anyone to spend that much money on me, or to spend it on someone else!

Andrew
It's a shame that we need to spend so much money to make people like us. It seems an act of desperation, more as a longing for commitment than sex. After all a few WKD's at the local cheese club will score these days. It makes sense to start small because you have to out-do yourself at each milestone down the line and starting at £200 will lead to a maxed credit card!

Mark
I believe that as a man it is important not to 'flash the cash' - I know from bitter experience that if you have money then there are plenty of women who will 'go for the wallet'. If a woman is worth knowing then don't let her know that you have money on the first date, just be yourself. 200 quid may be a lot to some people but nothing to others - just don't spend what you can't afford.

Rob Agasucci
OK, I'm 45 and have been out with loads of women in my life; if you can take advice from an old git who thinks he knows it all, here's what I say; firstly, any girl who expects to have a lot of money spent on her on the first date is a gold-digger; DUMP HER FAST. It's your personality that should attract someone, not your wallet.

Secondly, any man prepared to spend £200 on a first date just looks desperate; it doesn't impress girls at all, and if it does then they must be dumb and not worth going after in the first place. Save your money and find someone else.

The best way is to choose something to do that doesn't involve cost; take her to a funky shopping area, a museum, an art gallery, or anywhere interesting that involves lots of conversation and laughs. Entertain her with your charming, witty personality, not paid for stuff.

If the evening is a success, and you decide you want to see her again, then maybe treat her to more. You shouldn't have to bribe someone into liking you. I'd happily spend £200 on my wife, but only after she's my wife or we're engaged. I have seen homeless guys with girlfriends, so it MUST be a myth that you have to spend lots of money on a date.

Unattached
£200 on a date? U R havin a laugh! Curry & beer for 2 don't cost that much! You're being paid way too much if that's what you spend.

Em
Nick [further below] you sound like a really great catch... if you only ever go for "low maintenance fatsos" maybe this is because you're not all that fantastic yourself! It doesn't sound like anyone would be lucky to go on a date with you...

Samuel
£200 is listed as the average only because most men are abject liars. If you're spending two hundred quid just trying to impress someone, you're obviously lacking where it really counts. Money cannot buy charm or make you any less of an egocentric, boring, materialistic fool!

Greg
I can say I have spent that much on a date, but never the first few. I only let it get to that level if I finally feel there's something there and it's reciprocated.

Chris B.
I'm a male and I wouldn't spend £200 on a date. I can't recall any lady turning up in £200 worth of underwear either. In future I'll check the uderwear status before we eat. If she's spent that amount on underwear, then the inference is that the meal is probably superfluous...

imogen
i went on a date a week ago and it cost £1,600 as i went to a very very posh restaurant and it was rubbish.

Rich Sittema
Isn't that like $300 US? I would never, and I repeat NEVER, spend that much money on a girl. Ever.

Justin Bhalla
I normally spend all my dads taxi earnings for that day. But we normally go to my uncles curry restaurant so i dont have to pay for that anyway.

Alexis
I always pay for half, its only fair. So if the date costs £200 you should only be spending £100. Much more reasonable plus you don't seem like sponger.

Laddie
It is very stupid to spend £200 on a date. What if the lady says no after that????? It's worth it only when the relationship has gone deeper

Jonthan Jacob
I believe the best way to gauge a date is how much is the woman willing to spend on the man. Come on it’s the turn of the millennium its time woman start paying and making the first move. I think the best date I will go on is where a woman picks up or at least makes the attempt to pick up the tab...

Paul
Remember, it's an average; that means 95% of us pay 50 quid and the other 5% £10k! Although, I think I probably average around £100!

David Sizer
Fish & chips with a cup of tea or find someone else!!!!!! (no credit card stupid)

Max
£200.00...for a date! I'd sooner spend it on something worthwhile, like a new mp3 player or some books and DVD's.

Stephanie
Eh? I'm not sure I've been on one of these mythical 'dates' where you don't know each other and spend huge amounts to look the part. I've paid for and received the odd expensive dinner for special occasions, but even then I doubt I've spent more than £150 at the very most. I would never spend £200 on my appearance purely for a single date. Unless my date was very wealthy, I'd be suspicious of someone who spent that much on a night out, especially very early in the relationship: later on to celebrate things is fine.

Graeme Phillips
People spending £200 on a date are mad. If a woman gauges your worth by how much you spend on her, she is materialistic and not worth chasing after. And there is no point in women spending this much on a date, as if the relationship is ever likely to become serious, the man will eventually see her without make-up, a nice hairstyle, or sexy underwear. I take the view that people should start as they mean to go on with dates.

Nick
I rarely spend more than £20 on a date. But then generally I only ever go out with low maintenance fatsos who should be grateful for anything they get.

helal
Well everything that i have got on is about £150 and that aint including the watch or ring. The average ive spent on a date is about £100 for a meal for two and drinks. So with the stuff i wear and the date and driving her home would cost me about £300.

DD
Went on a date last Sat and between the cabs, meal, drinks It came to around £240...

L
Alice you're not findin' all of the tight ones as you so eloquently put it, rather you are probably not over 18 yet. If you wait you might get a yield, if she's worth it I'd be prepared to pay £200 to make a woman happy, in reality that is pittance. Of course, money not being a trade off for tangible emotions in a relationship.

lady ice
i think women should just forget this thing about men always have to pay then any date would cost less if you split it in half

Nadine
Lol, I've never heard of anyone spending £200 on a date either! You obviously must have money in the first place to even contemplate spending that kinda dosh for a date

Alice
I dunno who it is dats spendin £200 for a date, but i d really like to find out. The most i ve had spent on me for a date is about a fiver!!! Am i just findin all the tight ones or wot???
