1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Historic day for the US
Barack Obama
Barack Obama has been elected as 44th President of the United States of America. He becomes the first black leader of the country in one of the biggest moments in US history.
There were tears and cheers as the 47-year-old spoke to supporters at a park in Chicago. He said: "It's been a long time coming, but tonight... change has come to America."

Democrat Barack Obama defeated Republican John McCain with 52% of the popular vote. He won most of key battleground states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

He has to wait until 20 January 2009 before he officially takes over from current President George Bush.

  US elections 2008
What do you think of Barack Obama's victory? Is he the right man for the job? Did you stay up to watch the results? Has he inspired you?

DUCKENS
I AM SO PROUD OF U MAN I DON'T ANY WORDS THAT COULD EXPLAIN THE JOY IN MY HEART HAVING YOU AS MY PRESIDENT I CAME FROM HAITI IN 2000 I BECAME A CITYZEN AMERICAN IN 2006 IF I'M NOT MISTAKING BUT ANYWAYS I'M JUST PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

amber
hi hope it is going ok

otunko
To those who say that Obama is not black, i think they are either colour blind or they are so called mixed race aka no race who have an inferiority complex and would have wished they were white. You can call yourself anything you want but having read Obama's books i am convinced that he wants to be known for what he is.....a black man. It is actually wonderful that this man has risen above racial divides to become the most powerful man in the world. If that hurts any so called mixed race then go do something that the whole world can talk about and if anyone describes you as black then tell them you are mixed race. Let me remind the so called mixed that many years back their white mothers brothers would have hunted them down with dogs. At that time the only people who treated them with care were the same people they are now ashamed to be seen with.

Nancy Keyes
I am a "white" American from the south, and I was so happy to see Obama win! Unfrtunantly, there are a lot of racists in this country still!

liban
yo im really proud of you keep up like this one day ill be same as you all the people in my country were proud keep up like this

Lisa
Obama is an angel from heaven. He is the one God has chosen to help change the world. He has created a different mentality in those who saw color as an issue. Let us all work and pray that God would continue to guide them in the right way. It is time for us to accept each other for our intelligence and not to stray away from the present issues surrounding the world today especially in countries that see the USA as an enemy. He has the gift to help make a change. We in Anguilla said, "YES HE CAN."

Adam
I know this is a little late but I need to comment on Lilian Fagundes' comment. He does not honer Jesus Christ. He stands for abortion choice... Christ would not. He is not a Christian, therefore he cannot stand for Jesus Christ our Lord an Savior. As an add on to half of the other people that commented on this story... learn some grammer!!

xx-tiny_tytynium-xx
i am really proub ov obama well donee the first balck president on the united statescongratulations

Kola
The significance of Obama's win re-enforces the reality that indeed America is truly the land of hope, freedom and opportunities. Its a symbolic moment for African-Americans considering the rough road they have collectively toiled for more than a century toiled, but particularly it shows that whether black or white, the American dream is still very possible against all odds'...i hope that change that has indeed come to America would spread..even to Africa

mohammed darbiye

N.T.G
I think it is great that Obama is da first black president and to all those people mixed race and black who like to point out that he is mixed race and not full black dis wot i got 2 say.....bac in da day when dey was killing black people for nothing it wouldnt matter if u was mixed race cus from u aint white u gonna b gettin da same treatment as everyotha black man or woman ca u aint white, so hole tight Obama and his black family black people have cum along way and i am proud to b here 2 c it .x.

Dembele Lassanou
it's a good thing ,i m very happy and proud with Obama.this man is my uncle.i render thanks to god

G
The real victory here is that we (I am American - and can once again say that with some semblance of pride and hope) finally elected someone who has the intelligence and willing to work for the American people rather than their own financial interests and global corporate conglomerates.

L.D bristol
It was so soo nice an touchin to watch an to see all frens and family an jus people around me so HAPPY im still gettin texes... change is now!!! rosa parka sat so... wot a year! f1 formula racer, first black president...... it is something that is giving not only all black people but ethnic minority's as a whole some sort of hope... good luck to him, IM PROUD.X

Gareth
Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk.Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run.Obama WON so now we all can fly!I hope that all racists, black and white, take notice that now is the time to make a stand against racism (from black and white people). Look at what can be achieved if we all work together !

Lilian Fagundes
Obama, you honour Jesus Christ and He will honour you to face all issues with divine wisdom direction.

Garry Scott
It's about civilised people, doing a civil act: that civil act is choosing the right person for the job. In this case there is no other qualified person to pull America and the world out its current economic, political and social decay! Yes Barack Obama can!

harold
Conglats Obama.its my hope that you all with me wishing him all the best as this is a big challenge.if he made it to this far no doubt that he will make it.how nice is to be part of history,i have something to tell the next generation.GOOD LUCK OBAMA.

Zain
Rosa sat so martin could march..Martin marched so Obama could run...Obama ran.. so our children can FLY!

Tara
Im very proud of obama. To earlier comment made about him not being black and him being mixed race. To be classed as black when you are mixed race as a mixed race person myself I have no shame in because at the end of the day were it not those black people who fought for our civil rights we would not even be able to have a 'mixed race' title in the first place despite your mother being white. So dont disrespect the cause. To many other people out there 'mixed race' is still seen as lighter form of black because you are not white. We are not blind we kno he is mixed race and we are proud non the less. Big up obama. Lets hope that he is able to clean up the mess that Bush made. it will take a long time tho

chi
well done frist black man

Adrian Cline-Bailey
What this means now for Black people in the UK. African And Caribbean is that there should be no glass ceiling. It is not only singing, rapping and dancing, this generation can be scientists, bankers, doctors, laywers, accountants and economists. No one can tell me I can't do anything. That feeling i always felt when i stepped in a room full of white people, went away on the morning of the 5th of November. I walk taller, i speak more confidently, and i swell up with emotion when i see that all our potential and our dreams will come true. No more shanking each other, there are no more excuses. Senator Obama didn't have a father and look what he has achieved. President Elect Obama, thank you so much for believing you could be something more and greater. We have a black woman as the First Black Lady. And she is beautiful-a true African Queen. Well done Barack for staying by your convictions.

Gregsta
Well Dun Obama - u have already applied Change!!!I never know so many people talking positive about politiks it aint a geek topik no more!!We in middle of Credit Crunch - however sudenly every1 seems rejuvinated, inspired and confident that no matter of ur current situatution - the oppertunity is there "IF" u really do want it!!!brap brap

lennox
long time comin good role model for black people to look up 2 for the sheer commitment and belief. u.k is still very racist and instituitionalised i hope the obama outcome will break down the doors in the u.k

adam fish
i am happy and i love it

chalease
rachael big urself i up!!!!!! Why is it that every race that isnt white shud be called black obama is not black and never will be people say we should get past colour but we cant and as a full blak woman i feel hurt that people call him blak he is mix race 4 a reason because of his parents dad blak mum white so history has not been made as he is not a blak man an when people aknowledge that the better same with lewis hamilton the first blak man to win this formula one title he also is not blak but mixed race so dont tell people to look past colour it might not get to you to have every one class every non white race as blak but as a blak person i dont like it and it needs 2 stop.

Lerelle L
I can't beleive it. It wasn't long ago that black people fought to get the right to vote, now to have a black president that's just amazing! I wish Martin Luther King could see this day. A lot of peoples perceptions on black people will now change. This is proof that we're not all baby mama drama and in and out of prison. Obama is inspirational and despite what some people think it's not just because he's black, people voted for him however that did make people more enthusiatic when he won. I know i'm only 14 now (15 nxt week hooray!) but this is an event i'll tell my grandchildren about in the future! History in the making! should be an official annual holiday I can imagine it- First Black President's Day!

Justin
OBAMA!!!martin luther king had a dream and bwwoyy did u make that come true!!!

Emilia
THE CHANGE HAS COME AT LAST!!! YAY! :D Im home in Poland and Ive been brought to tears yesterday cuz what has happened stands for my ideals in life! thats why im studying to be a diplomat in Leicester to help end conflicts-all sorts of conflicts! in the future :) God Bless the new President :) xx

cres
dizzee for Prime minister!!!!

Dj Cookie, Leicester
Obama has proved that a dream ca be become reality. Martin Luther King's words will be echoing around America and the world now. Those who hate and appear negative about the whole scenario should look - it is nice to see someone who will may bring a change and some good to the world of politics but we can only hope that with all what is going on this world today that he can sort out a lot of the problems socially and economically that are wrong in our whole gobal society after January 20th next year!

oscar
congratulations to barack obama, a cool eloquent brotha. without going out of the race to find your wife, brotha you are my real hero.Today you made long gone brothas like 2Pac and Bob Marley very proud

Pippa
I understand that Obama has made history and it is a great achievement and a move forward and hopefully will help many others to open their eyes pass the colour of someones skin and see everyone equal.BUT are we more concern about the colour of Obama and is this the only reason why he has been elected because so many people wanted a black president?Lets just hope the people have picked the right person. Time will only tell.

maxine phillips
Many black people were lost this dramatical change has given more people hope. This is a positive role model which was neccesary. However Obama has a lot of cleaning up to do every one has to be patient with him. I pray God be with him for all our sakes......

Shade
This morning I was overwhelmed by the results; brought a tear to my eye. Despite being faced with the worst economic crisis in a century and two military wars, I trust that Obama will meet every obstacle with optimism!Isn't it weird how SUDDENLY everyone becomes interested in politics!

KHALID
I think Bro. Obama becoming the US President was beautiful moment in history for mankind, as it illustrated that change can and has just happened it reinforces that faith within ones self can go a long way. As a young Black British man I feel truly inspired and proud!!!

Rhonda
I'm in Texas, and I still haven't stopped crying yet. This is a victory for the countless numbers who came before to fought for Civil Rights and were struck down for a dream that has finally come true. The battle is all but won.Emanuel, your comments are respected, but you are missing the fact that most people thought a black man could be passed off as a Vice President, but the country wasn't mature or ready enough to elect a black president. I thought it would be years from now when this would happen. I have never been happier to be corrected and to know that this has restored my faith in my fellow countrymen. This is a day of days.

Chris G
It's good to see a black man can finally reach the highest office in my country, but the Obama hysteria over here is ridiculous. If you ask most people why they voted for him, they can not name one policy or reason why... other than change. Risky business

Michael
People should really stop mentioning his colour. Besides, he's of mixed-race, not Black. Just goes to show how much we are all still segragated if that's the only thing people acknowledge. I'm sure many of the 'sheeps' could not mention 2 or more proposals he has made to be elected.

Donard
While I am proud to have a black president, I am upset at his policys. The 700 billion dollar bail, doubling troups in Afganistan. It sure would of been nice to get somebody a little more unlike bush.

Rachael
I normally hate it when Americans get all emotional and cheesy but this truly was a breath taking moment- lets hope it inspires change over here! However I don't understand why Obama can't be recognised as a mixed raced male as well as Lewis Hamilton, we really shouldn't stand for every non white race being dumped into this 'black' category.

Rob
Being a 18 yr old British Black Man from Country i feel proud a Black Man against all da odds has done it So yh big up Obama His the modern day Martin Lurther King

Jessica
I am SO moved and in awe of this Presidential election. I am a white, 26 year old American woman and this election is just as important to me as it is anyone else. I am entirely impressed by and proud of this country for moving so far forward and electing to make such a huge and wonderful change.

headstation
What a sign to di World - after Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan we have now a Afro President indi US of A - i just hope there comes no brainless person that tries to kill him - Big Up Barack WoW - what a beautifull 1ST Lady

Tianne Dunkley
I think it was great tat Mr.Obama won its about time we had a Black person in power these days I think its a brilliant change for America. Xx

alesha
i think it is so amazing how far people have come today, this means people have changed thier way of thinking to allow this to happen. it really make me happy to think things may actually change

michelle
I am so proud of Obama and even more so proud of my African Kenya Heritage! It is time for a change! Celebration is defiantly in order! WELL DONE!

Lauren
It's been a long time comin, but a change gone come! who woulda thought the change would come in 2008. someone else posted that Obama can't do more than any other democrat could...they're wrong! On a political standpoint yeh he can only follow the policies of the democrat party but on a SOCIAL perspective he has already made a HUGE difference by showing us (black people in particular) that we can do it! whatever 'it' is that we wanna do we can achieve. I was walkin round my area today and for the first time black people were SMILING at each otha!!! (wen do we EVER do that) and we walked wiv a bit more swagger today, heads held high for a change - he give us somethin to be proud, happy and hopeful about. I can't remember the last person to do that to a whole community especially one as engulfed in negativity as ours. I actually believe his success will have some kind of influence on our communities here, we lack hope and positivity in our community and i think his example will encourage us to realise our own strength/intelligence/ beauty / swagger and everythin else glorious about us. nuffin really moves me emotionally but swear down last nite tears wer buildin up, and all i could do was grin while watchin him make his speech - trust he WILL make a change. Black people stand up tall!!!!!! bless x

Shereen McIntosh
Martin Luther King had a dream and today that dream has been fulfilled. Obama has made history and to the people living in this world has shown us they is hope left. Hope that one day a man in our obama would come along and make a change. Change is now and I am so happy to have bben alive to witness this glorious occasion.

sam sheridan
i think that obama will be an insperation to the whole nation , weather it be raining, sun shine,or snow obama we will go. big up the new president!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bri
Team Obama!!! He was history in the making when he first started to campaign. Congrats to him and his family but most of all America. I'm relieved that the right decision has finally been made.

Del Santo
Its a new age! hopefully. But i wonder how long it will take to try assassinate him, a new president black, white purple or blue wont change the racism in that country. i hope he can increase global issues upon America, for thats the only way hell manage to change anyones minds, until then hell just be americas first black president not Barack Obama

Elle Marie
I think its amazing that we have come this far as people together to make this happen. The speech i gotta admit brought a tear to my eye....But like everyone is saying, its all on him now to follow through with his promise's to America and the rest of the world. X

Dan Lee
i have to agree that young new voters emerge due to the fact that obama is black, but it is important to remember that just because he is the first black president doesn't automatically mean change is apparent, it is important to understand that his ethnicity brings about a very familiar (familiar to those of use who are not white) and fresh understanding on the race issue. America is easily one of the many countries with racial issues, giving birth to such radicals as the black panthers and the KKK, and it is the fact that Obama has lived in a country affected by these things, even listening to his own grandmother admit fear of passing black men which can only make his ambition and view for change more powerful.

arnold
one of the greatest feeling i hve eva had in my life nw this is going to show that there are no boundaries in making a dream come true god bless america and president obama

Ray Ray
As much as we would like to say people in America have overlooked colour, I think people just wanted a change from a 'W gonna be, Mccain' and Obama was just at the right place at the right time.

Ross Fonteyn
I'm a mixed race person and it really annoys me the way us mixed race people are classed as black. i was raised by my white mother who is an incredible, strong person who I'm very proud of. to deny I am mixed race and to call me black is to deny who my mother is. I think a mixed race person is a more acceptable black person to many white people. wouldn't it be nice if the first black president was actually black? Lets call him what he is 'mixed race'.

ParadigmShift302
I stepping stone indeed. Wow, I wonder what Bashy's thinking! However, I agree w/ the comment above. The common people have to slow up on their expectations and understand the problems inherited.

Lola
As a black woman today I feel very proud, it made me cry a little this morning watching the news. As a Black British person I don't think I'll see something like this in my lifetime here. We can barely acknowledge anything is wrong in this country and when you point out the the lack of change in the higher levels of government, business and society you are accused of having a chip on your shoulder. Not that you are saying that there is a lot of inequality here and we NEED to address it to create a more equal and fair country.

Nelson
Right now! He is the most powerful role model, Black kids have!He has proven if you are Black (young or old) & you have a dream of making a positive change in this world or even you’re community you can do. Now we as black people need to step our game.

Emanuel Wanat
I think that the whole first-black-president crush is an exaggerated populist strategy. Above all Barack is a democrat and no matter what the colour of his skin is, or how sophisticated orator he is, he won't do anything more than would any other Democrat do. There is no chance he will start a new point in USA history, as he will only realise the policy of the party, nothing more.

teresa
I am overjoyed!!!!! We have waited soooooo long for this moment and I am so blessed to be alive to see it! I am so happy because this has and will change the world. We've overcome hatred, and years of political injustice and countless barries to reach this point. Never again will a teacher be able to hold back a black child or a child of any nationality and say "you will never make it." Obama broke the barrier. He proved that with faith, tenacity and drive you can do anything. I look forward to his period in office, and living up to his promises. SAY IT LOUD!!!! God Bless

Dimitri McIntosh
Today is one of the greatdays in history and know the only way is forward

Chinyere N
I'm very happy that Obama won the presidential election and has now become the first black president of America. I hope he fulfils his promise of change. I pray that he'll be a very good president like he has shown that he can be. Everyone should keep in mind that he is subject to fault like past presidents, especially George Bush, and shouldn't give him a hard time if things go a bit wrong. I doubt he'll go wrong a lot with a strong and supportive woman like Michelle behind him.

Jessica
Good!

Adrian Grey
BIG!!! Respect to Obama for making history!! He has the chance to change the world as we know it. I just hope that he is given the chance to do his job correctly and that no ignorant person tries any threat on his life or his family. Let the change begin, God bless him.

Ny
Bout Time.

Julia Walsh
This has the potential to be a changing point in America's history. I am a big fan of Obama and hope he is able now to follow through on his electoral promises.

Artcha
History in the making! This is momentos and inspiring at the same time. However as much as this is a great turning point we need to overstand the problems he will face and we need to not be so quick to point the finger if issues are not addressed in the way the world would like them to be addressed. This is a big job and he will need everybody's support to make a change. Peace
