Frequently asked questions

Jobs at 1Xtra are advertised on the BBC Jobs site as and when they become available.

1Xtra receive a large number of work experience requests. Therefore we have to treat everyone fairly and equally.

There aren't any rules to becoming a DJ, and you often find that people have just fallen into it! The best advice is to get experience at hospital or local stations by doing voluntary work, and when you have more experience, offer your services to other local stations to see if they have any jobs.

After a few years experience, move up the ladder to bigger stations - regional radio, then national radio. If you want to work behind the scenes, another option is to try studying a course in radio production which will give you the skills you need.

Whichever route you take, after a few years experience in each field, try moving up the ladder to the next step. Be warned though - it can take a long time to get to the top at 1Xtra, so be prepared to work hard. People don't come to 1Xtra with no experience! Have a read of the biographies on each of the DJ's pages to see how they got to be at 1Xtra.

As 1Xtra is a busy place it is not really practical for us to give tours. To be honest we are just a building of offices full of computers and people working hard at them (sometimes!).

People on this board think he's better than Pac or Rakim but he's not!
