Favela Feva

L Double with the Brazilian dancers

“Since the year 2000, four thousand children have died as a result of the war between rival drug gangs in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.” - Patrick Neate

A few have chosen to fight this largely unreported war…

On September 5 2006, the best DJs and artists from the UK and Brazil came together for Favela Feva - a one-off event raising money to finance an internet radio station in one of Rio’s toughest favelas.

London’s top Brazilian venue, Guanabara, played host to DJs Gilles Peterson, Marky, Bryan Gee, Benji B and MCs Dynamite and Skibadee. Dancing came courtesy of Quilombo de Samba and Capoeira Canal, and there was an exclusive live performance from Bembe Segue.

All contributors offered their services for free and all the proceeds go towards providing the favela’s youth with training and equipment to build and run this new community radio station.

The station will fuse over 60 social action projects organised by AfroReggae - the internationally acclaimed hip hop act and Rio-based NGO. Their samba bands, theatre groups, circuses, capoeira and computer schools provide Brazilian youth with alternatives to the life of drug trafficking and gang culture which awaits them otherwise.
