Friday 17 August 2007, 11.00 - 11.30am

Should we go with our gut feelings? Can we trust our hunches?

Mark Lythgoe is a neuroscientist who is sceptical about intuition. In this programme he discovers whether it's a real phenomenon or just a popular myth.

Presenter Mark Lythgoe and a female speed dater in a wine bar.
Mark tries his luck at speed dating.  Will his intuition lead him to the right partner?

Mark travels from a wine bar in London, to a farmer's market in Nottingham, to find out how our intuition works.

He talks to ex-business manager Eugene Saddler-Smith who believes that intuition can be every bit as good as rational analysis. Plus psychologist David Myers explains how intuition harnesses the power of the unconscious mind.

However, it's not all good news for our gut feelings. As statistician Tony O’Hagan from the University of Sheffield points out, our snap judgements can be spectacularly wrong. Our minds are easily swayed by false cues, badly judged probabilities and the fallibility of our memories.

So when should we use our intuition and when should we think again?
